Water Leak Caused By Stolen Copper Pipes, Police Say

Police said water was flowing into basement where pipes were cut.

The theft of several copper pipes from a Hamburg Turnpike residence may have been responsible for a water leak at the home earlier this month, Bloomingdale police said.

Police responded to the home around 2 p.m. on Oct. 4 after water department employee Frank Neuberger had arrived and found that several copper pipes were cut and removed, including a pipe that was flowing water into the basement.

While police believe the copper pipes were thefted, they said they are unsure how long ago the theft may have occurred.

Neuberger shut off the water to the residence, which is located on property owned by Bank of America, police said. The incident was reported by a subcontractor who was at the residence on behalf of Bank of America to winterize the property and noticed the leak.
