Water Main Break Shuts Down Main Street

One lane of traffic reopened after 10-inch main broke near Bella Sera.

A water main break shut down Bloomingdale Main Street Tuesday afternoon as Department of Public Works (DPW) crews worked to restore the broken roadway beginning around 3 p.m.

DPW Superintendent Al Gallagher said a 10-inch main broke in front of a Bloomingdale restaurant.

"When it blew, right in front of Bella Sera, the whole road came up like a half an inch by " he said.

Main Street was closed immediately following the break, but by 6 p.m., Gallagher said DPW crews were able to open up one lane of traffic heading from Bloomingdale Borough Hall, on Hamburg Turnpike, toward Riverdale. Gallagher said he was in touch with Borough Engineer Paul Darmofalski and that crews began working on the break right away.

Traffic could be limited to one lane into the morning hours Wednesday.

"It's going to be an all-night job," he said.

Flooding was not a major issue as a result of the break, Gallagher said, with as much water as would fall after a heavy rainstorm filling parts of the street.
