Woman Restrained After Allegedly Resisting DWI Arrest

When Kinnelon police told a Rutherford woman she was being arrested, she allegedly replied, 'No, I'm not.'

A Rutherford woman allegedly resisted arrest Saturday when  said they smelled a strong odor of alcohol on her after she apparently ran a red light on Route 23.

According to police, when officers informed Michele A. Tulp, 46, she was being arrested on DWI charges, she allegedly replied "no, I'm not" and tried to walk away.

Police said Tulp allegedly refused to put her hands behind her back and had to be restrained. She was transported to the police station, where police said she also allegedly refused to provide breath samples.

According to police, Ptl. Keith Kelly noticed a 2006 Nissan four-door vehicle run a red light on Route 23.  When Kelly approached Tulp, who was in the driver's seat, he allegedly noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Tulp. Police also said they noticed her hand movements to be fumbling and slow.

Police said Kelly asked Tulp to perform several field sobriety tests. She allegedly had difficulty balancing and following direction, police said.

Tulp was charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, failure to observe a traffic signal, refusing to submit to a breath test and careless driving. She was released with a ticket to appear in court at a later date.
