Butler to Consider Law on Solar Panels

Council members want to ensure safety for volunteers.

The will be considering enacting an ordinance that would allow the borough to regulate solar panels on residential properties and their installation as per the advice of Butler Fire Official Bob Westdyk.

Westdyk also serves as the fire official for and and Butler Borough Administrator James Lampmann said the intent is to standardize the boroughs' policies and procedures regarding regulating the panels. The Kinnelon Council as well.

Lampmann said the main concern of the fire official is safety for volunteer public safety officials responding to an emergency situation at a location where there are solar panels and the possibility of a hazard at the scene.

"You're trying to prevent electrocution," he said.

The council members seemed to agree that the borough should do something to ensure safety.

"It's important, it's the safety of our volunteers," Councilman Stephen Regis said.

Councilman Bob Fox recommended that before the council act on an ordinance, the borough's Land Use Board have the opportunity to look at it and make recommendations on the regulations.
