Bloomingdale Tax Increase 'Lowest in Years,' Councilman Says

Average tax increase will be $66.40; public hearing set for June 11.

The Bloomingdale Borough Council unanimously approved a resolution introducing a 2013 municipal budget with a tax levy increase at just over 2 percent.

Councilman Ray Yazdi said the increase was "the lowest we've had in years," at 2.042 percent, which translates to $66.40 for the average home assessed at $254,046.

"We'll go over it all," Yazdi said, saying the public would have the chance to comment on the budget publicly at the June 11 meeting.

This budget, which was briefly reviewed by Mayor Jonathan Dunleavy, comes in at just about $11,000 under the state-mandated 2 percent cap and its allowable exemptions. The tax levy increase is 2.042 percent over the 2012 tax rate.

Tax ratables decreased in Bloomingdale over the past year, causing taxes to go up for all residents. The average assessment went down by over $1,000 per home, from $255,286 in 2012 to $254,046 in 2013.

The total tax levy will be $7,514,257, or $787,736 including the library tax. Last year's tax levy was $7,631,914.

Dunleavy said a user-friendly budget will be posted to the Bloomingdale Borough website Wednesday.
