Kinnelon Closes on Weber Tract

Silas Condict Park to be extended, land to be used for passive recreation.

After nearly 10 years in the making, the acquired the Weber Tract on Wednesday.

"I think that it's been a long, arduous journey to complete the transaction," Kinnelon Mayor Bob Collins said, adding that it could not have been made possible without the assistance of many Kinnelon residents, elected officials and grant funding that helped the borough acquire the land, to the right of Kinnelon Road near Maple Lake Road.

Collins said about 164 acres of land were preserved, with 62 acres transferred to the Morris County Park Commission to be used as an extension of immediately after the acquisition. The remaining land will be used by the borough for passive recreation, such as hiking, the mayor said.

The borough received nearly $2.4 million in grants, Collins said, which he said speaks to the reputation of the borough. Included in the grant funding was $1.4 million from the Morris County Open Space Preservation Trust Fund; $500,000 from the Morris County Park Commission; $300,000 from the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority; $20,000 from the Land Conservancy of New Jersey; and $300,000 from the New Jersey Green Acres Program.

Additionally, the borough put in about $260,000 from its own Open Space Trust Fund.
