Kinnelon Community Accomplishments Recognized

Girls softball team, OEM coordinator honored at council meeting.

The 12U Kinnelon Girls Softball Team presented trophies to Mayor Robert Collins and the Kinnelon Council at Thursday's meeting, representing two victories-one achieved at the Annual Lincoln Park Spring Fever Tournament andanother at the .

The girls stood before the council as their coach, John Jacko, acknowledged their accomplishments. Jacko also recognized Madison Ledwith, who received the Michelle Sullivan Spirit Award out of 200 girls in her age group. This award is given to those who best exemplify character, team spirit and sportsmanship.

Collins also included the girls' parents among those honored.

"There's one group we probably should acknowledge, and that's your parents. It's a lot of miles and a lot of time and we want to say thank you to them," he said.

Also at the meeting, Collins recognized former councilman and Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Coordinator , who has been named the 2012 Lakeland Hills YMCA Citizen of the Year. Hicks was a borough councilman from 1963 to 1971 and served as Public Safety Coordinator, which was later called Civil Defense Director. Collins said Hicks was exceptionally important in his role with the  and a key to finalizing and formulating some of the borough's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant applications. 

On a bittersweet note, the council accepted resignations from 

Vreeland currently serves as chairperson for Sustainable Jersey and is on the Environmental Commission.

Collins recognized the contributions both women made to the borough.

"Sustainable Jersey is a huge undertaking and [Vreeland] felt that, given her limited time, her effort should be focused on that," Collins said. "Carol was an exceptional committee member and for a number of years, on the Open Space Public Advisory Committee. I just want to acknowledge her efforts in protecting the town and ensuring that Kinnelon stays Kinnelon." 

"Anne Arnowitz thought it was time for participation by other people on the library board, to her credit," Collins said. "She'll be sorely missed. I don't know if we can 'not accept' resignations, but if you want to vote against this one, feel free."
