Kinnelon Environmental Info Available for Residents' Viewing

Latest Environmental Resource Inventory Update offers details about ecological conditions in the borough.

The 2013 Kinnelon Environmental Resource Inventory Update is now available for viewing by any resident interested in learning more about the borough.

The update, a part of the Kinnelon Master Plan adopted by the borough's Planning Board last April, includes 18 maps depicting information about geology, aquifers, slopes, endangered species habitats and more. There are also trail and greenway maps as well as 42 tables offering climate and georgraphical information on items including bedrock and surficial geology, temperature and precipitation averages and earthquakes. Narratives include up to date information on climate, air, geology, hydrology, soils, wetlands and public infrastructure.

The Environmental Resource Inventory Update was initiated by the Environmental Commission in March of 2012. EC Vice Chair Carol Vreeland and Barbara Davis of The Land Conservancy of New Jersey made a presentation to Mayor Robert Collins and the Kinnelon Council for support of the ERI Update. The plan was to fund the project by applying to the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions for a $5,000 grant to be matched by $5,000 from the Open Space Trust Fund. Both requests were granted and the borough retained TLC-NJ to implement the ERI Update.

The result is a modernized document which will soon be available for reference at Kinnelon Borough Hall and the Kinnelon Public Library. Copies will be donated to Kinnelon High School and Pearl R. Miller Middle School for ecology and environmental science classes. At the same time, copies of Kinnelon’s Lucy Meyer’s 1973-74 Natural Resource Inventory will also be donated to the schools so that students may compare the two inventories.
