Route 23 Crosswalk to Get Funding For Safety Measures

State agrees to fund safety enhancements for dangerous Butler crosswalk.

announced Tuesday that the state Department of Transportation (DOT) would be funding safety measures for the Route 23 and Kiel Avenue crosswalk. The safety improvements will include a revised pedestrian speed countdown meter, which would give pedestrians more time to cross, and educational signs.

"At least we're getting something more," Alviene said during a borough council workshop.

"Something's better than nothing. It's very dangerous up there," said Councilman Robert Fox.

Alviene said he had spoken to Assemblyman Alex DeCroce (R-26) and representatives of the DOT and that he had to "lean on" the department for an answer of whether they would fund safety projects on the crosswalk. While he said he would have liked to see more, the mayor said, "We're going to have to walk before we can run and it's a start."
