Twp. Receives $3K for Hunting on Public Land

Washington Township Committee OKs bow, shotgun hunting on two parcels of land.

Washington Township will receive a total of $3,351 to allow two hunting clubs access to use parcels of land this season after resolutions on the matter were approved at the committee’s work session meeting Wednesday night.

New Jersey Conservation and Sportsman Club was awarded the use of land on Reservoir Road, which encompasses 131 acres, for the bid price of $2,601. Last year the same club was awarded this parcel of land and used shotgun as well as bow and arrow to hunt. This year, the club will only hunt with bow.

The second parcel of land, located at the intersection of Spring Lane and Marjorie Drive, encompasses 55 acres and was awarded to HHH Hunting Club in the amount of $751. The club will use both shotgun and bow and arrow to hunt this season.

The township-owned parcels of land were a to produce revenue and cull the deer populations.

Residents were split on the idea during a Washington Township Committee public hearing, with detractors saying the land was too close to residences and neighborhoods, while proponents felt the need to eliminate deer from the area was imperative.

The governing body voted 4-0 to approve the resolutions Wednesday night, as committeeman Dave Kennedy was absent. Kennedy, in the past, voted against using the land for hunting purposes.

@cv, I understand that. These animals had their natural homes taken away from them. I think it is a shame that developments like Hidden Hills were allowed and are ecological disasters. I also feel that the $3K is pitiful to allow these cowards with their bows & arrows to tromp around near people's homes. Lastly, I find hunter's extremely creepy. I could never understand the pleasure in watching the life going out of any living creature.

@Gigi my Dad hunted for years and I hate it. My mother wears fur coats and it sickens me. I do wish we had a natural balance here and I hop no more homes get built. P.S i wish animals coul use weapons.

I don't think this is a very good idea, way to close to the housing developments and the road next to the woods is used quite a lot, a children are playing nearby. A disaster waiting to happen for any amount of money is not worth it.

Okay people, calm down. Nobody likes killing animals, but we have to control the population. If you have seen some of the fishing TV shows, some of them run down a river, motors blazing in a boat. Do you know what happens? The carp jump like crazy. Hurting people. Do we want the same to happen with dear? Adding wolves is worse than hunter because they to can become invasive. What I am saying is we should control the population of animals. If we don't, it will be like the polar express with dear. If you know what I mean. Think about what I said and think if you still believe about what some of you said. You may think differently.

Roger, if we were given full auto weapons and shot dear, don't you think the population would go extinct.
