WTB Students Receive Recognition from BOE

High Honor students, North Jersey Area Band and Geography Bee winners among honorees.

Student recognition was the theme of the night at Tuesday night’s meeting, as several students at the were recognized by school principal Frank Verducci for their recent outstanding achievements.

The first students to be recognized were those who represented Walter T. Bergen and in the North Jersey Area Band, which consists of students from 28 middle schools across Passaic, Sussex, Morris and Warren counties and performed a concert this past Sunday. Walter T. Bergen had several students participate in the concert, including eighth-graders Sofia Martini, Taylor Russnak, David Douglass and Steven Riley and one seventh grade student.

Next up were the three top finishers in the school’s National Geographic Geography Bee, which was overseen by teacher Shane DeLucca. Sean Ellicott finished in first place overall, while fellow students Ethan Schlotterbeck and Adem Cengiz finished second and third, respectively.

Ellicott will now take and submit a test to see if he qualifies for an invitation for the state-wide geography bee, for which a location has not yet been determined.

“In the past, it was held at Rutgers University,” said DeLucca. “I’m not sure if they’re still doing it there.”

Walter T. Bergen School students who finished the first trimester of the school year on the High Honor Roll were also recognized. In all, there were ten students honored for the achievement, including Jennifer Majchrzak, Jessica Frost, Derek Timpanaro, Zoe Bross, Allison DePuyt, Marc Anthony Federici, Allison Mizzone, Ethan Schlotterbeck and Matthew Ullrich.

All honorees were presented with a Certificate of Achievement and a coupon for a free Applebee’s Dessert, as well as applause from all those in attendance.
