Butler BOE to Hold Special Meeting To Interview Candidates for O'Shea's Seat

A special meeting of the Butler Board of Education will be held on April 14.

will be holding a special meeting on April 14 to interview candidates to replace Lisa O'Shea's seat on the board. The board announced O'Shea's resignation during the March 10 meeting.

O'Shea's resignation, which was effective on March 10, was after the deadline for candidates wishing to run for the school  board to submit nominating petitions. As a result, the board will interview candidates to appoint to the board.

Business Administrator Debra Naley-Minenna explained Thursday that there are time constraints to fill the seat.

"The board has 65 days to appoint a replacement for Mrs. O'Shea's seat," she said.

Board President Matt Lee said the goal will be to swear in the new member by May 2. Naley-Minenna said that the board has the option of either interviewing and swearing in the new member during the special meeting on the 14, or simply interviewing candidates during the special meeting and swearing them in at the following meeting.

Lee said he would prefer the board wait to swear in the candidate as he would want to make sure the new member has all the packet information and time to review what the board will be voting on before that meeting. Naley-Minenna said in that case, since the following meeting will be held after the election in April, the candidates who are running for the board in the election will be sworn in first, followed by the person filling O'Shea's seat.

Also during Thursday's meeting, Superintendent Mario Cardinale announced that the committee interviewing candidates to fill Principal William Hanisch's position has narrowed the candidates down to eight. Hanisch announced earlier this year that he will be

The eight candidates will now move on to the third round, where they will each have in-depth interviews with Hanisch, Cardinale and . Cardinale said the district received about 60 applications and the committee interviewed about 20 candidates.

During the meeting, Cardinale also said that middle school students will be starting to use Google Docs to organize and share information after District Supervisor of Technology Evelyn Horner rolls out the ability to use the system on the middle school level soon. "I think in a world where kids need to get used to a number of different platforms and a number of different modalities to present and organize information, the more we can get them accustomed to that variety, the better," Cardinale said.
