Career-Focused Teens Meet Professionals at WTB School

Walter T. Bergen School eighth graders experienced 'Career Day' Wednesday.

The hosted "Career Day" in the library Wednesday, bringing students together with local business people to learn about different professions and experience simulated job interviews.

School Librarian Dennis DiLorenzo said this year was the third that he and district substitute Donna Lee Duffy worked together on the program, which introduced eighth graders to the local professionals. Seventh grade volunteers accompanied guests to their seats and introduced the interviewees.

Students each came prepared with a copy of their resume and a list of questions to ask the professionals. Tri-Boro Patch Local Editor Ariana Cohn-Sheehan participated as an "Internet Journalist" and Advertising Manager Peter Howard also participated and interviewed students.

The students asked questions like, "How did you get started in your career?" or "What's the most challenging part of your job?"

"Could you support a family on what you earn?" one student asked.

Interviewers also had questions for the students, like "How are your grades in school?" and "What interests you about this career?"

Many of the students proudly described their current community involvement, as listed on their resumes, including volunteering with , or the CHAT program. The students also documented their chores on their resumes, detailing yard work or garbage responsibilities.

After each interview, the business people were asked to rate the students based on the questions they asked, the way they answered and questions and their appearance (including body language). Groups of students also heard from the professionals during intimate, classroom presentations.

Some of the local business people in attendance included owner Kurt Wubbenhorst, Kinnelon Judge Andrew Wubbenhorst, Veterinarian Dr. Alice Tucker (from the ), Chief Joe Borrell, Member and former teacher Tom Kroncke, Attorney Jeff Merlino and more. Students also met with an FBI agent, a dental hygenist, a cosmetologist and representatives from many more businesses.

The Bloomingdale Education Association provided food for the guests of the school.
