Hall of Honor to Recognize Alumni's Efforts to Improve School, Communities

Staff members create Hall of Honor for Butler High School alumni, community members.

People are at the heart of Butler High School’s 105-year history. Soon, there will be a place to properly honor those individuals whose contributions to the school can be seen and felt today.

To that end, the school is creating a Hall of Honor to commemorate the contributions of alumni who have contributed to the school and their communities in a positive way.

A selection committee is looking for nominees for the hall’s inaugural class.

“It was an idea we started kicking around for a while now,” said Principal Martin Wall. “Our goal is to open it this spring at some point.”

At one point, eight municipalities sent students to the school and there are people who live in other communities, not just Butler, who helped make the school what it is today.

“There are so many people who have contributed to the school over the years who don’t live in Butler or Bloomingdale,” said Gail Bignell, a history teacher and a member of the selection committee.

Wall said the committee wants to use the hall to “establish role models” for students.

“We want our students to see the contributions different people who have walked the halls of Butler High School,” Wall said. “Sometimes there can be a disconnect with the people who came before us and it is important that we appreciate what’s been done here in the past.”

Nominations need to be submitted by Dec. 1. Nominees must “exemplify the highest standards of ethical conduct and moral character, which include outstanding citizenship and demonstrated qualities of leadership.”

Alumni are eligible 10 years after graduating from the school. Non-alumni are eligible five years after their service to the school or their community has ended.

Commemorative plaques describing each inductee will be hung at the school. The committee wants to induct its first class next spring.
