Kinnelon Students Place Second in University Film Competition

More than 300 teachers and students participated in 'French Day' event.

A group of Kinnelon High School students won second place in a Montclair State University film competition March 1 that included secondary school students from New Jersey and Pennsylvania during the university's "French Day."

The event was sponsored by the Language and Humanities Departments and the film competition asked students to demonstrate the French language through depiction of places where French is spoken in the world today.

Sophie Tiajoloff, Andreas Goergen, Aemin Becker and Toby Arguello participated on behalf of KHS and were led by French teacher Sophie Adams. Their film, "Perdu!" landed them in the second highest spot of the competition.

According to the university, more than 300 teachers and students participated in the "French Day" event, which celebrated the humanities, history, literature, art, communication, music and global studies. Students and their teachers attended workshops and watched films around the theme “voyager en français,” which translates to “travel in French.”

“It is remarkable to see so many students using their French skills so beautifully in real-world contexts. I am thrilled that they realize French’s unique status as a global language and hope their next step will be to travel to the different countries where French is spoken,” Montclair State University Language Professor Elizabeth Emery, one of the event’s organizers, said.
