Middle School Offers Jump on Summer Reading

Walter T. Bergen Middle School in Bloomingdale is offering a summer book club for all Bloomingdale students entering 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grades.

Walter T. Bergen Middle School in Bloomingdale is offering a cool alternative to pools and lakes by offering a summer reading program to escape the heat and promote reading for students.

“The summer is typically a time when many students look to avoid school work at all costs” stated Principal Verducci. “With the help of Mr. DiLorenzo and the support of the Board of Education, the message we’d like to send our students is that summertime is a good time to catch up on all your pleasure reading. To that end Mr. DiLorenzo is going to host a Summer Reading Club!”

The program will meet each Wednesday starting July 10 and will run through Wednesday August 14. All Bloomingdale students entering 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grades are invited to attend. There will be two sessions held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The club will provide a quiet area where students can get a head start on their summer reading assignments while also allowing for small group discussions.

“I expect the program to evolve as it goes on, from simply providing quiet reading time to holding group discussions, and anything in between,” said DiLorenzo. “Students will also be permitted to check out additional books if they so choose.”

The library has acquired many copies of the required summer reading books and also provided the reading lists to the Bloomingdale Public Library.

Parents wishing more information about the Summer Reading Club should contact Mr. DiLorenzo at the school to obtain a permission form for their child.

Reading lists and required assignments are available on the school website.
