Pending county approval, Dr. Gary Vitta will begin July 1.

Bloomingdale Public Schools has chosen a new interim superintendent to replace . Dr. Gary Vitta is expected to join Bloomingdale three days a week starting July 1, pending approval by the Passaic County Superintendent of Schools.

"[The board of education is] waiting right now on the contract being returned by the County Superintendent of Schools, Robert Gilmartin. He has the contract that was offered to Dr. Vitta and he’s reviewing it for his approval," Brennan said.

Brennan said the board interviewed four candidates, narrowed it down to two finalists and selected Vitta. Vitta recently retired from his position as superintendent of the Rockaway school district, where he served for five and a half years.

“Right now, [the board's] interest is a part-time, interim superintendent,” he said. “Interim superintendents get a one-year contract and they can renew, so can work no more than two years as an interim."

Brennan did not know the salary offered to Vitta in the contract, but said the most he can make is $519.23 per diem by the cap imposed by the state government.

Brennan has served as an interim in Bloomingdale . He said he is choosing to step down after one year for personal and professional reasons. Previously, he was the superintendent in Pompton Lakes for 11 years until he retired in 2010.

Vitta and Bloomingdale Board President Lauren Grecco said they did not want to comment until after the county makes a decision on the contract.
