The Walter T. Bergen Middle School started off the new year with their annual schoolwide Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Teachers Cassandra Harvey and Sophia Bianchi organized the event and served as moderators. Contestants from each grade made it to the school finals by winning a bee held in their respective language arts classrooms. In all, 27 students in grades 5 through 8 participated in the schoolwide assembly.
In the end, fifth grader Julian Amadio spelled “fantastically” to edge eighth grader Camerin Caraballo and was declared spelling champion for 2013.
Amadio will move on to the Bergen & Passaic North Jersey Regional Final which will be held on March 20 at Bergen County Community College.
Besides the two finalists, participants included: Anabella Gonzalez, Patrick Monahan, Evan Ortiz, Alyssa Polito, Chris Pritchard, Natalie Watroba, Evan Van Lenten, Zoe Bross, Samantha Serpe, Cassandra Cui, Sama Dwaidari, Adrian Hanessian, Janelle Lopez, Trevor Luh, Emily Cooper, Jessica Frost, Mark Harland, Joshua Loeschorn, Shayna Luke, Jonathan Cozzino, Mac Bross, Natalie Kowalski, Katherine Reda, Steven Skubisz, and David Van Houten.
