Students Get a Feel for Different Vocations at Metlife Stadium

Field trip was part of Financial and Career Planning curriculum.

A group of Kinnelon High School students got a taste of the various vocations that are necessary for the New York Jets and Giants to play football.

Students in Financial and Career Planning classes at the school visited MetLife Stadium recently to expose them to the many financial business operations and jobs needed to get the teams onto the field every week.

“I try to bring a little bit of the real world into the lessons to connect what they’re learning in the classroom to everyday life,” said Dafna Garrahy, a business education teacher.

Students toured the 82,000-seat facility and learned about the different types of vocations available at the stadium after Garrahy and her colleague, Anna Ellington, took them on the trip.

“They learned what it took to add the extra seats the stadium, what kind of jobs it took,” Garrahy said. “They found out about careers they never knew existed.”

Students also met Bill Heller, the Giants’ senior vice president and general counsel. Heller discussed what he did to get his job.

“All these people, from Mr. Heller to the person taking tickets, they all work together to create something,” Garrahy said. “You can be the general counsel or the person taking tickets. They all have to work together.”

But these students are not just taken on field trips. They also are taught how to properly search for a job.

Students search the Internet for a real job they would like to obtain. They create resumes and cover letters. Each student participates in an interview for the position. They are taught how to properly act on an interview.

“These students learn what to takes to get there, to get the job they would like to have someday,” Garrahy said.
