Young Inventors Wanted for Bloomingdale School Camp

Camp Invention INNOVATE program will be offered to children entering grades one through six this year.

Bloomingdale Public Schools will be offering a different kind of camp this summer as the Camp Invention INNOVATE program will begin on June 24.

The nationally-known camp program will be open to children entering grades one through six.

"This exciting, week-long adventure in creativity immerses children in imaginative play that reinforces and supplements school-year learning in the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)," according to a press release sent by Walter T. Bergen School Principal Frank Verducci. "Children will work together to seek innovative solutions to real-world challenges and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills such as teamwork and creative problem solving as they rotate through four modules each day that disguise learning as fun."

The students will learn through four camp modules in the week: Power'd, where kids will assemble motorized creatures while learning about alternative energy; Hatched, where kids will learn about economics explained through a virtual world; I Can Invent: Launchitude, where kids will use tools to take apart unused appliances and invent a "duck chucking device;" and Geo-Games, where kids will play classic, high-energy games.

The modules will be facilitated by local teachers, with high school and college students serving as Leadership Interns. One staff member will work with every eight children. Walter T. Bergen School teacher Maureen Jacobs will lead the program.
