BBYC Ends Regular Season, Looks Forward to Playoffs

BBYC Bulldogs take on Totowa.

Sunday marked the end of the UCJFL's regular season, with the BBYC Bulldogs traveling to take on the Totowa Tigers at the Totowa PAL's field, where muddy excitement was the order of the day.

Once again leading the D squad offense was quarterback Brett Redner, who carried the ball 17 times for 61 yards and a touchdown, in addition to going one for two passing. The defense, charged up after almost shutting Oakland out earlier in the week, and had outstanding efforts by Mark Finelli (9 tackles, 1 for a loss), Alex Orth (1 sack, 6 tackles, 4 for a loss), Mikey Castiglia (4 tackles, 3 for a loss), Matt DiGerolamo (4 tackles) and Saverio Marinelli (3 tackles, all for a loss). But the Tigers took advantage of what time they were given at the end of regulation to tie up the game and then win it in overtime, 13-7.

The C squad continued to fire on all cylinders, with offensive performances by Joseph Walsh (18 rushes for 92 yards), Matt Wolowitz (8 rushes for 36 yards and 2 touchdowns), Jacob Luciani (56 total yards, including 8 rushes for 49 yards) and quarterback Evan Smith (4 rushes for 17 yards and 1 touchdown). The Bulldogs held the Tigers in check with a combination of tackling, lead by Nicolas Perrotta (4 tackles), Garrett Koppenal (3 tackles, 1 for a loss), Joseph Walsh (3 tackles, 1 for a loss) and turnovers, including fumble recoveries by Joey Vitone and Justice Struble, the latter caused by Jason Polons, who also had 3 tackles on the day. The C squad wrapped up their season with a 20-0 victory, giving them a 6-1 record on the season.

The B squad found itself in a defensive struggle with the 5-1 Totowa team. The Tigers managed to hold the Bulldogs to 121 yards total offense, with the work mainly split between Joe Bastante (9 carries, 38 yards) and Sean Centinaro (12 carries, 83 yards, 1 touchdown). Centinaro also led the team in tackles, with 15, followed by Christopher Grecco with 10 and Joshua Webb with 7 and a forced fumble. Key defensive plays were also turned in by Patrick Brady and Josh Fane(each with 3 tackles and 2 passes defended), Brandon Wyble (2 tackles, 1 pass defended and an interception) and Shane Connolly (1 sack, 4 tackles, 1 for a loss). But the game remained in doubt until, backed up against his own end zone, Declan Minogue blasted a 30-yard punt and forced the Tigers to have to go to the air to try to tie the game. But their hopes were dashed by Joe Bastante, who intercepted the ball with 52 seconds left on the clock to preserve a 6-0 win for the now 6-0-1 B squad.

After Totowa recognized their graduating eighth graders in their program, the A squad Bulldogs took the field, looking to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.

Leading the attack on the ground was Danny Castiglia, who carried the ball 12 times for 84 yards. At quarterback, Cole Rhinesmith rushed the ball himself 7 times for 14 yards and a touchdown, and threw the ball 13 times for 75 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions, mainly to Sean Mefford (3 catches for 28 yards) and Darius Soriano (3 catches, 35 yards, 1 touchdown).

Castiglia and Rhinesmith also lead the way on defense, with each of them having 12 tackles and Castiglia having a fumble recovery. The defensive effort didn't stop with those two, however, as Darius Soriano had 10 tackles and 1 pass defended, Nick Guagliardi had 9 tackles and 3 passes defended, Mefford had 7 tackles and a pass defended, Michael Warren had 6 tackles and Patrick Eisenhardt had 3 tackles and a sack that led to a turn over on downs deep in Bulldog territory.

Unfortunately it wasn't quite enough, as the final score was 21-14 in favor of the Tigers, giving the A squad a 4-3 record that, looking back over the season's accomplishments, they can be proud of.
