Butler Baseball Opens Season With Win

The Bulldogs baseball team opened their 2011 season with a 9-3 victory over Mountain Lakes Monday.

IN SHORT
In the second inning, the Bulldogs manufactured three runs to open up the scoring, then followed it up with a six-run third inning. In that frame, Butler scored all six runs with two outs, highlighted by a two-run homerun by left fielder Alex Wright. Wright finished the game 1-for-4 with the dinger and two RBI, while also adding a remarkable catch in the field.

BULLDOG OF THE GAME
Patrick Kivlon—
Kivlon pitched seven innings on 119 pitches and seven strikeouts and with three runs allowed (two earned) on six hits. The senior will be pitching for Kean University in Union next season.

The lefty Kivlon dominated the Lakers, particularly in the final two innings. He utilized a moving fastball and a sweeping curveball to send the Lakers into seven groundouts and four strikeouts in the final two innings of the game alone.

OTHER KEY PERFORMANCES
James Spadaccini (Butler), 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and a run scored, despite going down with a leg injury late in the game; Anthony Morse (Butler), 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored; Robby Rohan (Mountain Lakes), 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

"It's a continuation of where [Kivlon] left off last year. He had a real solid year for us and he came out today and threw a lot of strikes, worked ahead in counts.
