Butler Student Athlete Earns $500 Scholarship

Kylie Rooney, a graduate of Butler High School received a $500 scholarship from the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletics Association.

Kylie Rooney, a current Bloomingdale resident and Butler High School graduate was awarded a a $500 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) scholarship by Success Communications Group.

On May 19, Rooney was awarded during the Twentieth Annual Scholar Athlete Program luncheon where more than 70 high school students from across the state received a total of $133,500 in scholarships from the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletics Association (NJSIAA).

At Butler High School, Rooney was a member of the varsity field hockey team. During her field hockey career, she recorded a total of 14 goals, 9 assists and 7 points, according to NJ.com.

In order to qualify for the NJSIAA scholarships nominees must be seniors, participate in one varsity sport, exhibit school and community citizenship and have at least a 3.0 grade point average, the organization said in a written statement.

The scholarships were provided by by corporate sponsors and other organizations, according to the NJSIAA.

Established in 1918, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletics Association (NJSIAA) is a voluntary, non-profit organization comprised of 433 accredited public, private, and parochial high schools. A member of the National Federation of State High School Associations, the NJSIAA conducts tournaments and crowns champions in 32 sports. Championship competition for girls is sponsored in basketball, bowling, cross country, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, outdoor track, winter track, and volleyball. Boys’ championships are determined in baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, fencing, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, outdoor track, winter track, volleyball, and wrestling.
