J.R. Reese has football in his blood.

The son of New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese has played quarterback for his hometown Jefferson Falcons during his high school career, but when National Signing Day came, Reese went a different direction.

Despite a scholarship-in-hand to play for Tennessee-Martin, Reese decided to take a walk-on chance with Rutgers University’s Scarlet Knights, according to dailyrecord.com.

Reese told the newspaper he secured a spot on the team roster, but did not have a scholarship.

In his senior season the athletic quarterback threw for 1,480 yards and 17 touchdowns, the report said, adding 1,141 rushing yards and 10 more scores.

The Scarlet Knights football team will enter the Big Ten division in 2014, and recruited 26 new players, according to the team’s website. Eight of those players are from New Jersey.
