Kinnelon Eye Doctor Honored in West Milford

Club screens young students for amblyopia.

At the recent meeting of the West Milford Lions Club, Kinnelon Ophthalmologist Dr. Eric Shnayder was awarded a certificate of appreciation for participating in the Lions’ popular amblyopia screening program in local pre-schools and kindergartens.

Amblyopia (lazy eye) is the leading cause of monocular blindness in North America for those under 70. However, if risk factors are detected by age 4, 95 percent of patients can have their vision saved and avoid the lifelong effects of amblyopia, which may include a dramatically higher chance of loss of sight in the other eye, learning delays and limitation of career choices.

"The time and effort that the West Milford Lions Club volunteers have put into the amblyopia screening of pre-schoolers through kindergarten students is quite worthwhile," Shnayder said.
