Pledge Walk to Help Community Soup Kitchen Feed the Hungry

Charitable walk has an educational component that allows participants to walk 3.1 miles in another's shoes.

More than 900 walkers will unite this weekend to raise funds for the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center and increase understanding about the problems of hunger and homelessness.

Hunger Walk 2013 is a 5K pledge walk to raise money for the Community Soup Kitchen. The event takes place Sunday afternoon at Morristown's Church of the Redeemer at 36 South St.

Since 1984, the CSK has served a hot noontime meal, 365 days a year, to as many as 300 men, women and children a day, the organization said. Over the last few years, traffic has risen by almost 50 percent. Most of those finding nourishment at the kitchen these days are mothers with children, returning veterans and fathers who have lost their jobs.

This charitable effort is one with a client-focused twist, so no one forgets what the walk is all about: Each walker assumes the identity of a composite CSK guest and tracks that character’s story through cards handed out at story stations during the walk route.

The rain or shine event starts registration at 1 p.m., with the walk beginning 30 minutes later. After the walk, refreshments and live music by the Kings Road Band will be provided.

Organizers encourage community members to get involved with friends, relatives, coworkers and neighbors to walk or donate for the cause. All walkers raising $100 or more will receive a Hunger Walk T-shirt.

Participants may register or donate online.
