Just six months after celebrating his 101st birthday, a man who devoted much of his life to the Bloomingdale community, Laurence "Bud" Bennett, died on Thursday. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's RC Church in Butler before a burial mass at the First Reformed Church Cemetery in Pompton Plains, according to an obituary on NorthJersey.com. Bennett worked part-time as a tax assessor in the borough earlier in his life and had been a member of the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department since 1956. He even continued to assist the firefighters monthly with the department's ziti dinner. "I devote all my spare time to the fire department," he said last January. Jonathan Batista to be remembered by family and friends at Monday morning funeral.
U.S. Army soldier Specialist Jonathan Batista had many friends whom he loved spending time with, according to an obituary posted in his honor on the M. John Scanlon Funeral Home Friday. "Jonathan loved spending time with his many friends, who easily took to him and his charismatic personality," the obituary said. Batista, a 22-year-old Kinnelon resident, was killed in combat in Afghanistan Sunday when his unit was attacked by enemy small arms fire. At the time, he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Batista was a member of the 2nd Batallian, 321st Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, N.C., according to the Department of Defense. John T. Cunningham, a popular New Jersey historian who wrote more than 50 books about the state's past, some of which were used in grade-school classrooms and turned into award-winning documentaries, died Thursday. He was 96. Visiting hours are scheduled for Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main Street, Madison. A memorial service for Cunningham is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Morristown United Methodist Church, 50 S. Park Place, Morristown. Preston "Jay" Fairlamb Jr., age 64, of Butler, died Sunday, May 13, 2012. Jay was born in Paterson, NJ, the son of the late Preston and the late Flora (Winters) Fairlamb.
