The manager of the Tick Tock Diner charged with hiring a hitman to kill his uncle is free after posting $600,000 bail Tuesday, NorthJersey.com reported. Georgios Spyropoulos, 45, of Clifton, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, attempt to commit murder and unlawful possession of a weapon in April. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. In an effort to advance himself financially, Spyropoulos hired a man who turned out to be a confidential informant for the state police, to kill his uncle Alexandros Sgourdos, co-owner of the famous Clifton Diner. Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, 34, charged with killing Joseph Galfy of Clark.
Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, dubbed "Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker," was arrested Thursday evening at the Greyhound Bus Terminal in Philadelphia by members of the Philadelphia Police Department, Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow said. McGillvary has been charged with the murder of Joseph Galfy, Jr., 73, which allegedly occurred in Clark on May 12. McGillvary will be processed in Philadelphia and returned to New Jersey in the coming days. His bail was previously set at $3 million, and he will be lodged in the Union County Jail in Elizabeth, Romankow said. Man was on the bridge over the Passaic River near Hobson Avenue.
A Chilean man was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by a NJ Transit train on a bridge over the Passaic River. Nelson Felipe Guerra Concha, 35, was in New Jersey visiting family in Little Falls, said Nancy Synder, a spokesperson for NJ Transit. Concha was struck shortly before 7 p.m. by a train on the Montclair-Booton line. The bridge is located near Hobson Avenue. Concha was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:10 p.m., Wayne Police Lt. Paul Dring reported in a news release. Service was temporarily suspended on the Montclair-Boonton line after the accident. The NJ Transit Police Department, with the assistance of the Wayne Police Department, is investigating the incident, Dring said.

Rockaway man charged with running marijuana production facility after he called police to report finding his wife dead in their home.
A Rockaway Township man was charged with maintaining a drug production facility Tuesday when he called police to his Sanders Road home after finding his wife dead inside, authorities said. The cause of death of Donna Kent, 56, was under investigation Wednesday, but Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp said an autopsy showed no indication of foul play. When police arrived at the house -- spurred by a 911 call from the woman's husband -- they smelled marijuana and applied for a search warrant, Knapp said in a release. Police found 30 pot plants in the house, Knapp said, some of which were hidden behind false walls. Also, $10,000 cash, a handgun and two shotguns were found in the home, Knapp said. One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transportation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is this a reasonable proposal? According to a 2011 Mothers Against Drunk Driving report, the latest available data shows New Jersey ranked 31st out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia) in drunken driving injuries and deaths. A New Jersey State Police sergeant has received probation for his role in the March 2012 unauthorized escort of a high-speed sports car caravan to Atlantic City. Sgt. First Class Nadir Nassry, 48, of Phillipsburg, pleaded guilty to a fourth-degree charge of tampering with records and received a judgment from Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Bradley J. Ferencz mandating one year of probation and 75 hours of community service. Also facing charges is 29-year-old Joseph Ventrella, a seven-year state trooper from Bloomingdale, who reportedly was part of the caravan. Malfunctioning refrigerator causes blaze that spreads to the outside of the building.
Butler firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at Jiggs Corner Music Saloon Monday morning, authorities said. The Butler Police Department received numerous calls at about 11 a.m. about a fire that broke out at the bar, Capt. Ciro Chimento said. Emergency personnel discovered a refrigerator unit malfunctioned and caught on fire. The flames spread to the outside of the building. The Butler Fire Department brought the fire under control within minutes. Several neighboring businessmen battled the blaze with fire extinguishers before the fire department responded to the fire. From june 24 through 27, the Bloomingdale Police Department offers its second annual Junior Police Academy. In last year's program, a group of 21 cadets saw what it's like to be a cop while in the Junior Police Academy: They learned about the training and techniques used by law enforcement, participated in a role-playing mock trial scenario, processed crime scenes, conducted motor vehicle stops, used radar equipment and investigated a motor vehicle accident. Police said man did not get into the targeted home and nothing was stolen.
An unknown man reportedly attempted to break into a Bloomingdale home last Wednesday morning on Reeve Avenue, according to Bloomingdale Police. At about 10:30 a.m., officers were called to the scene after getting a report of an attempted residential burglary, Ptl. Dan Fletcher said. The home's resident said he heard someone attempting to open the locked front door and then saw a man walk around to the back of the building, where he reportedly tried to open an also-locked rear door. The resident said he saw the person leave driving a gray sport utility vehicle that had been parked in the driveway, Fletcher said.
