Kinnelon Kids Win First Place at State Tournament

Got Tutors team take top award for the second year in a row.

The Got Tutors team of students from Stonybrook School in Kinnelon took first place at the Destination Imagination tournament for the second consecutive year, NorthJersey.com reported. The team is composed of fifth graders. The Kinnelon Smarties and the GhanDI teams placed second the competition. Destination Imagination Inc. is a non-profit that helps kids develop opportunities that help develop their skills and talents for the 21st century. More than 160 teams from New Jersey participated in the competition.

Girl Scouts Unveil Bird Habitat

Troop 71146 developed bird habitat project at Walter T. Bergen Middle School themselves and created birdhouses and feeders.

Girl Scouts unveliled a bird habitat and feeding area at Walter T. Bergen Middle School in Bloomingdale recently.  The troop completed the public service project for their Girl Scout Bronze Award. The girls installed native plants, bird feeders, a birdbath, nesting boxes, and educational signs. They constructed many of the materials themselves. The girls raised $800 from a special talent show they put on to help fund the project.

Bloomingdale Students Learn The Value of Saving

Fourth graders at Samuel R. Donaldson School in Bloomingdale learned the importance of saving earlier this week as part of Teach Children to Save Day. Carianne Reeber and Kelly Ballistreri reviewed the basics of needs and wants, identifying expenses, and the value of setting goals to save money with three classes. “This program gives us the opportunity to use our life experiences and banking knowledge to motivate students to become lifelong savers,” said Thomas Shara, Lakeland’s President and CEO. The American Bankers Association established Teach Children to Save Day in 1997.

Martha B. Day School to Celebrate 50 Years

Bloomingdale elementary school will host rock 'n' roll-themed party this October.

The Martha B. Day School will be celebrating a milestone birthday this year during a party in October to honor the elementary school being open for 50 years. A rock 'n' roll-themed party will be held on Oct. 5 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the school. During the party, a DJ will play music and kids (and their parents) will be able to enjoy food, do art projects and more.  The event will be highlighted by visits from alumni who are invited as special guests, according to a release from the school. Middle School Offers Jump on Summer Reading

Walter T. Bergen Middle School in Bloomingdale is offering a summer book club for all Bloomingdale students entering 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grades.

Walter T. Bergen Middle School in Bloomingdale is offering a cool alternative to pools and lakes by offering a summer reading program to escape the heat and promote reading for students. “The summer is typically a time when many students look to avoid school work at all costs” stated Principal Verducci. “With the help of Mr. DiLorenzo and the support of the Board of Education, the message we’d like to send our students is that summertime is a good time to catch up on all your pleasure reading. To that end Mr. DiLorenzo is going to host a Summer Reading Club!” The program will meet each Wednesday starting July 10 and will run through Wednesday August 14. Camp Invention to be Held in Bloomingdale Soon

The program costs $230 to attend.

Camp Invention will be held at the Walter T. Bergen School June 24 thorough June 28, NorthJersey.com is reporting. Principal Frank Verducci said that 31 students have been enrolled in the five-day long program.  The camp costs $230 to attend. Bloomingdale Children's Choir Performs First Spring Concert

The Bloomingdale Children's Choir performed six songs for more than 100 attendees.

The Bloomingdale Children's Choir, made up of fourth, fifth and sixth graders recently performed its first Annual Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 29. The choir performed six songs under the musical direction of Keren Tuck for more than 100 guests. "The mission of the Bloomingdale Children’s Choir is to encourage an evident love and appreciation of music; Promote a healthy self-esteem through a positive environment and opportunities to perform; provide music education and build a positive sense of community through song," said Lori Villa.

Retired Kinnelon High Driver's Ed Teacher Honored

Maureen Nussman was named a Graduated Driver Licensing Champion by the New Jersey Teen Safe Driving Coalition.

On Tuesday, May 28, retired Kinnelon High School health and driver education professional Maureen Nussman was named a Graduated Driver Licensing Champion. The event was held in Monroe Township and was attended by teen safe driving advocates from across the state. Nussman, and several others, were named 2013 GDL Champions by the New Jersey Teen Safe Driving Coalition, a project made possible by a grant from The Allstate Foundation in partnership with the National Safety Council. “Maureen and the other members of the Class of 2013, are working diligently to educate and advocate for the proven principles of NJ’s progressive GDL program, which has helped lower teen driver crashes, injuries and fatalities to historic lows,” said Pam Fischer, …
