Turkey Vultures 'Truly Scary' in Bloomingdale

Borough animal control officer said the birds some find a nuisance are seasonal, and the season's almost over.

Don't be surprised to see turkey vultures lurking in Bloomingdale — and if they bother you, don't worry. They won't be around long, according to Bloomingdale Animal Control Supervisor Lisa Perry. But they are here. Residents have contacted Patch saying they had seen the scavengers. Cheryl Bavaro shared photos of what she saw and added that at one point, she counted 23 of the birds in her back yard. "There was one day when they were around when I had my baby in my arms," she recalled. "It was truly scary." Bavaro said she tried to call the borough for help but had not yet received a response. Borough Mayor Jonathan Dunleavy said that animal control was on the case, but was still baffled by the question. "I am not sure what an animal control…

I live in Butler and there are times when we've counted over 100 in just our yard alone. When we first moved in we were frightened by the sudden appearance and there are many mornings when we are awoken to the sound of the wings flapping and feet scraping on our roof. However, they do not harm anything (except maybe a few grill covers that are torn to shreds) and are so interesting to watch. They…   more ›

Borough Council Questions Interlocal Services Agreement

Bloomingdale business administrator will identify all costs involved.

At the Bloomingdale borough council meeting Tuesday, a resolution for an interlocal services agreement between Bloomingdale and West Milford emergency services was up for adoption. Borough administrator Ted Ehrenburg explained that the agreement is basically a mutual aid agreement authorizing Bloomingdale to provide emergency animal control services to West Milford if their own animal control officer isn't available to cover it. Ehrenburh said the borough would incur the expense of sending someone out, and then get reimbursed by West Milford for the hours.  Council President Linda Huntley asked what the borough charges West Milford for providing the service. "It’s the same agreement we have with Pequannock," Ehrenburh said. "It's the …

Animal Licensing Canvas to be Conducted in Bloomingdale

Animal control to check if dogs and cats are properly licensed.

If your dog or cat is not yet licensed, you better get them licensed quick, as Bloomingdale Animal Control will be completing a state-mandated door-to-door canvas this summer that could result in summonses if your pet is not. Licensing a pet helps animal control officers and neighbors to identify the animal in the event they are lost or missing. It also lets officials know that your pet has had the proper vaccinations and is not dangerous to other animals or humans. Fees for licensing include: $12 for a dog that is spayed or neutered; $15 for a dog that is not spayed or neutered; $5 for a cat that is spayed or neutered; and $8 for a cat that is not spayed or neutered. Licensing forms can be obtained through the Bloomingdale Health …

What to Do if You Cross Paths With a Bear

A few tips on what to do as bears start to make their way into your backyard after a winter’s nap.

With spring on its way, bears have already begun emerging from their dens and searching for food. Some people see a bear and think of Winnie the Pooh. Others see that same bear and think of them as rabid beasts. The truth is, bears are more interested in food than humans, but if a bear shows that they are not afraid of humans, there could be trouble. Lt. John Schwartz of the Kinnelon Police Department described the incidents the department encountered with bears last summer. Last May, he said, a bear broke into a house on Thornwood Drive in Kinnelon looking for food. A woman who was there alone heard noises in her kitchen. When she went to check on it, she found a bear clawing its way through her screen door. She locked herself in another …
