Moms share tips and creative lunch ideas.
Kids head back to school this week. Back to school means back to packing lunches. Yikes! I have such a hard time coming up with new ideas. Peanut butter and jelly gets boring. Nutella has been a great backup especially paired with some strawberries, but that gets old too. Regardless, both options will be in my pantry for busy mornings but I need some more interesting solutions. Do you have any good lunch box ideas? I asked around and some other moms shared their tips with me. Elise S., an N.J. mom of two, told me how she brightens up peanut butter and jelly or tuna sandwiches with a little trick. “I sometimes cut them into different shapes with cookie cutters or use a little gadget that cuts the sandwich into a circle with no crusts.” …

School districts across the country will bring new meaning to the "apple a day" saying this school year as nationally-mandated school lunch standards take effect. Beginning in September, the new lunch standards, introduced in January by First Lady Michelle Obama under the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, will be implemented. The standards were created to help fight childhood obesity throughout the nation. According to a press release from the United States Department of Agriculture, the new meal standards are designed to "make the same kinds of practical changes that many parents are already encouraging at home." This involves the inclusion of fruits, vegetables, whole grain-rich foods, low-calorie foods and foods with reduced amounts of …

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association released its classifications this week for the upcoming high school football season, following the executive committee's approval to create a Group V designation in the four public school sections in May. "This creates a greater opportunity for schools and for student-athletes," Jack DuBois, NJSIAA assistant director who is in charge of football, said following the approval. "It increases the number of teams playing in the playoffs from 128 to 160. At the same time, it eliminates 16 consolation games that schools didn't want to play anyway." The proposal also allows teams with records are under .500 to participate in the playoffs if they are needed to fill an eight-team bracket. "We…

Interim superintendent said districts may save on costs of implementing teacher evaluation program.
During his first Bloomingdale Public Schools Board of Education meeting, new Interim Superintendent Frank Buglione spoke about continuing the ways the Butler and Bloomingdale school districts can work together as the districts head into a new school year. Buglione said he has had conversations with Butler Public Schools Superintendent Mario Cardinale about implementing one of the state's four recommended methods of teacher evaluations. Each school district has until December to implement a teacher evaluation method, Buglione said, but working with Butler to choose a method that fits both districts may be beneficial. "We can maybe save on the costs of the resources there," he said. Additionally, Buglione said he would like to form a …

Closure of Butler Catholic school affects enrollment for Butler, Bloomingdale schools.
The recent closing of the St. Anthony of Padua School, in Butler, has forced many students and teachers to find new schools. While many students may be enrolling in another Catholic or private school, some students, already residents of Butler and Bloomindale, are choosing to enroll in the tri-boro's public schools this fall. As of Aug. 5, five students who previously attended St. Anthony School, were enrolled at the Bloomingdale school district for the upcoming 2012-13 school year, according to Interim Superintendent Frank Buglione. "This number could go up closer to the beginning of school," Buglione said. Eleven new students, including the five former St. Anthony students, have enrolled for the fall. The total number of students …
