Willowbrook frenzy fades early Friday morning.

Willowbrook Mall at 6 a.m. was almost quiet. Many of the overnight bargain hunters had gone home or to the next site. Black Friday shoppers had waited for hours late Thanksgiving night for the mall's opening at midnight.

Black Friday Rush Hits the Rockaway Mall

Hundreds wait in lines after turkey meal to be the first to get holiday deals.

Hundreds rushed to the Rockaway Mall Thursday night to be the first to check out this year's Black Friday deals and to get a head start on holiday shopping. Some headed over right after their turkey meal, while others even skipped their dinner to make sure they could be the first in line. The line at Best Buy started a full day before its midnight opening on Friday. Maplewood resident Amanda Meehan was the first to get to the store at midnight on Thursday. She slept in her car, camped out all day, and skipped her Thanksgiving dinner to get the Toshiba 40-inch TV special for $179.99. Most customers who waited in the Best Buy line were also hoping to get the Toshiba deal that saved $240 on the TV. By 11:30 p.m., the line wrapped around the …

There is nothing being sold that I would consider worth more than spending time with family. No big deal can take the place of loved ones. In a few years the things people bought on sale will be in the trash. When tough times come it is your family that will be there for you. I wish people would realize that and set their priorities better than they do now. People should always come before things.   more ›

Best Black Friday Deals in the Tri-Boro

Local deals may entice shoppers away from the malls and into neighborhood stores this season.

As the stuffing begins to settle in the bellies of Thanksgiving diners across the country, some will already have their eyes on the newest and hottest holiday gifts as they head to the malls on Black Friday. Others will ditch the chaos and packed parking lots to shop local. Black Friday, the day when the Christmas shopping season officially begins, means something to not only big-box retailers, but small businesses as well. In the tri-boro, business owners are proving it by offering specials and deals on Friday only to kick off the holiday season. Antonelli's Jewelry will be offering several Black Friday specials on a variety of pieces in the store. Certain showcases will feature jewelry at 10 percent off, with some fine jewelry discounted…

Our small Main St businesses are bending over backwards to get your attention and give you personal service.... I've rediscovered small hardware stores. Within 5 minutes, I purchased a rare item (a retractable pulley clothesline), chatted with the salesperson, paid for it, and drove away. Try it, you'll like it! My big box days are virtually over; I sure do miss those "downtown" days.   more ›

Shoppers Line Up Early for Black Friday Deals

A few dozen people waited outside Toys 'R' Us and Kmart Thanksgiving night.

Shoppers eager to get in on some early holiday deals lined up outside Wayne stores all day and night Thursday. Wanda Jimenez from Paterson was the first in line at Kmart near the Wayne Hills Mall. She waited in line with her husband Steven to buy a 50-inch flat-screen television for less than $290. “We ate Thanksgiving dinner right here,” Jimenez said with a smile. “It’ll be well worth the wait.” The Jimenezes weren’t the only ones who gave up their warm homes to save some money on a hot item on sale. Some wrapped themselves in blankets for the chance. Dennis Janitz missed out on Thanksgiving dinner too. He was the first person on line at the Toys R Us on Berdan Avenue. He was hoping to buy a PlayStation 3 packaged with a few games and …

Shoppers Cram Willowbrook on Black Friday

Willowbrook Mall was bustling with activity at 5 a.m. Black Friday. The mall was supposed to open at 6 a.m., but several security personnel said the mall opened at 3 a.m.; Gap and Macy’s opened at midnight. Toys "R" Us on Hamburg Turnpike opened Thanksgiving night at 9 p.m. Dozens of people lined up to purchase discounted technology like netbooks and video games. People carried multiple bags from several of the large department stores at 5 a.m. One family used a stroller to bring five bags of merchandise out to their car. “There’s not really one thing I think people want this year, but the sales are the best and places are rewarding shoppers for spending a lot of money,” Christina Hendericks, a Wayne resident, said as she walked back to …

A Relatively Calm Black Friday Morning in Rockaway

Ample parking and stores not overly crowded at the mall.

The massive rush generally associated with Black Friday was somewhat calm this year at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall Friday morning. There was ample parking outside and the mall wasn't overly crowded. There was one exception: The Apple store was packed, but there wasn't a line to get into the store. Did you stop by the Rockaway Townsquare Mall on Friday? Tell us in the comments about your experience.
