'Nasty' Storm Could Last 9 Hours

Bloomingdale DPW superintendent said highways are particularly slippery.

Bloomingdale Department of Public Works (DPW) Superintendent Al Gallagher has advised motorists to avoid driving Wednesday night as a winter storm has created hazardous road conditions throughout the area. "It's nasty out here," Gallagher said as he sat in traffic on Hamburg Turnpike just after 4 p.m. Gallagher said Route 23 and Route 287 were particularly slippery and that he had seen cars sliding on the roads. Kinnelon and Butler police were unavailable for comment. Bloomingdale DPW crews began salting the roadways around 3:30 p.m. when snow started to fall. By 4 p.m., Gallagher said the snow started to mix with sleet as it fell. Gallagher said the borough's weather advisor has predicted 2 to 4 inches of snow to fall within a nine-hour …

Water Main Break Shuts Down Main Street

One lane of traffic reopened after 10-inch main broke near Bella Sera.

A water main break shut down Bloomingdale Main Street Tuesday afternoon as Department of Public Works (DPW) crews worked to restore the broken roadway beginning around 3 p.m. DPW Superintendent Al Gallagher said a 10-inch main broke in front of a Bloomingdale restaurant. "When it blew, right in front of Bella Sera, the whole road came up like a half an inch by Frank the Barber's," he said. Main Street was closed immediately following the break, but by 6 p.m., Gallagher said DPW crews were able to open up one lane of traffic heading from Bloomingdale Borough Hall, on Hamburg Turnpike, toward Riverdale. Gallagher said he was in touch with Borough Engineer Paul Darmofalski and that crews began working on the break right away. Traffic could be…

Sandy Sand Bags Handed Out in Bloomingdale

Volunteers help residents, business owners by distributing sand bags Sunday.

As Hurricane Sandy potentially makes its way to New Jersey this week, Bloomingdale residents and business owners who took advantage of a service of volunteers Sunday morning will be able to block doorways with homemade sand bags. "We gave out more than 600 bags," Bloomingdale Department of Public Works Supervisor Al Gallagher said. Bloomingdale Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members and Boy Scouts from Bloomingdale Troop 86 filled the sand bags Sunday morning and helped load them into cars. Cars lined the driveway from the Bloomingdale DPW garage to Union Avenue, with residents waiting to get as many bags as the borough could spare. Bloomingdale Cracks Down on Trashed Yards

Council members complain of trash cans, brush left on properties and roads too long.

Bloomingdale will now be tougher on residents who deviate from property maintenance ordinances after a resolution calling for zero tolerance was passed at the April 24 borough council meeting. Mayor Jonathan Dunleavy said a major concern and driver behind the resolution was that many residents who receive summonses for poor property maintenance get off with either minimal or no retribution because they are able to have their fines reduced. “Those are the mixed feelings and mixed signals I think our property maintenance team is getting,” he said. “It tends to lessen the impact of our employees being able to do their jobs.” As an example of poor property maintenance in Bloomingdale, Councilman Ray Yazdi said many residents take brush from …

Bloomingdale to Replace Sanitation Truck

Backhoe and DPW truck to be repaired.

The Borough of Bloomingdale will be replacing its sanitation truck and repairing Truck 2 and a backhoe for the Department of Public Works. Borough Administrator Ted Ehrenburg asked the council to consider repairing Truck 2 and the backhoe at the council's meeting Tuesday, telling the council that the truck needs to be available for the winter season. "We need to get this up and running because this truck needs to go back into service," Ehrenburg said. After receiving estimates, Ehrenburg said the cost of repairing the backhoe should be about $3,197.67 and the cost of repairing Truck 2, as will be specified in bid specifications, should not to exceed $8,500. "Why don't we maintain our equipment better?" Councilwoman Linda Shortman asked. …
