NJ League of Municipalities invites Butler, Kinnelon and Bloomingdale students to apply for $1,000 college scholarships.
Three students from throughout the state will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the New Jersey League of Municipalities and Butler, Kinnelon and Bloomingdale students will be have a chance now as well. Bloomingdale Mayor Jonathan Dunleavy, a member of the League, said he will be reaching out to the Butler and Bloomingdale school districts to explain the scholarship program, the Louis Bay 2nd Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition. Through the competition, students are required to write essays about what their mayors and elected officials "do best." Council voted to approve Jonathan Dunleavy taking on administrative responsibilities.
In a 4-2 vote, the Bloomingdale Council approved expanding the mayor's position to a full-time role Monday morning. The council unanimously voted in favor of Jonathan Dunleavy serving in that role. Both council Republicans, Councilwoman Linda Shortman and Councilman Mark Conklin, were not in favor of the new mayoral structure, but lauded Dunleavy for the work he has done assuming administrative responsibilities and said they support him. Discussion on full-time mayorship had been tabled since Tuesday when Borough Attorney Fred Semrau had advised the council to hold off on voting on the change, unprecedented for Bloomingdale, while he looked into legal concerns raised by former Councilwoman Linda Huntley during a public hearing on the …

The following is a Letter to the Editor submitted by former Bloomingdale Mayor Bill Steenstra. If you have a letter you'd like to submit, send it to ariana.cohn-sheehan@patch.com Dear Editor, Being involved in borough government for 10 years, four as mayor and six as councilman, I have experienced many meetings in which different opinions were expressed. Many times, discussions were heated, but never did a member of the governing body go home. They worked their problems out because they were elected to serve, represent and make decisions on behalf of the residents of Bloomingdale. Some decisions are not popular, but that's what it's all about. As I watch the meetings on TV, it is appalling to watch the business of the town get removed from…

Gary, This scholarship is an opportunity for 2 Butler High School Juniors or Seniors to win a $1000 college scholarship from the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.
