Ultimately, one of the two men who fell in the lake, 52-year-old Frank Ferrell, of Ringwood, died upon arriving at Chilton Hospital after he was submerged in the lake for more than 10 minutes. But more than six volunteers worked together to pull Ferrell and 49-year-old Theodore Andreniuk from the water. The men were ice fishing at the time, according to Bloomingdale Police Chief Joseph Borell, when a resident of a nearby home called 911 just after noon on Feb. 26 and said a person had fallen through the ice. Sandy Relief Efforts Recognized in Bloomingdale

Several volunteer organizations were honored by the mayor and council Tuesday night.

The relief efforts of dozens of Bloomingdale volunteers following Superstorm Sandy were commended Tuesday night by Mayor Jonathan Dunleavy and the borough council. Men and women in uniform filled the council chambers as they were called to the center of the room by group to hear kind words from the mayor and receive a plaque commending their efforts. Dunleavy said all of the volunteers went "above and beyond the call of duty during Hurricane Sandy." "It was a tough time for all of us, the storm," he said. Dunleavy first commended the Department of Public Works employees, who he said, asked for no fanfare because they were simply doing their jobs. "These gentlemen didn't want any recognition," he said. Dunleavy said the employees worked 18-…

Bloomingdale Resident Warned Not to Burn Brush

Bloomingdale school employees said they smelled smoke coming from nearby residence.

Bloomingdale police and fire officials were dispatched to a Heather Lane home where a resident was burning brush Tuesday after Martha B. Day School employees said they saw smoke and smelled burning. According to police, the Borough of Bloomingdale has an ordinance that bans open fires in the borough. Police responded at about 9:30 a.m. after the employees said they smelled something burning from a residence near the parking lot. The resident was asked to extinguish the fire. Police said the resident agreed not to burn again after being given a verbal warning.

It's not just a local borough ordinance that bans burning brush, or leaves, it is a NJ state law going back 40 years for environmental reasons not for fire prevention. Local fire officials and forest fire wardens can issue permits for recreational things like bonfires and camp fires in addition to agricultural reasons. It is one reason that NJ residents pay such high property taxes and/or fees …   more ›
