Letter: Thanks for Honoring Veterans at Tri-Boro Parade

Borough clerks proud of community spirit at Memorial Day parade.

The following is a Letter to the Editor submitted by the borough clerks of Kinnelon, Butler and Bloomingdale. If you would like to submit a Letter to the Editor, send it to ariana.cohn-sheehan@patch.com. Dear Editor: We would like to thank all of those who came out to remember our veterans on May 28 for our Tri-Boro Memorial Day ceremonies in the Boroughs of Bloomingdale, Butler and Kinnelon.  As we marched through the towns, it was evident from those who lined the streets that community spirit was at its best in showing our veterans the honor and appreciation that they so truly deserve, not only Memorial Day but everyday.  Special thanks for all the participants in the parade who once again showed their community spirit and respect for …

Mobile Food Vendor Law to Remain Unchanged in Butler

After receiving advice from borough attorney, health board does not vote to amend ordinance.

The Borough of Butler's mobile food vendor ordinance will remain as is after the issue was discussed by the Butler Board of Health and public at two meetings, including Wednesday when the decision was made. The board had originally attempted to modify the ordinance to no longer allow mobile food vendors in Butler out of fear of some members that an unlimited number of mobile vendors could apply to do business in the borough, and some members' concerns about safety of patrons purchasing from mobile businesses. After a well-attended public meeting on April 11, the board decided to limit the number of mobile food vendors, which include ice cream trucks, hot dog stands and more, to five. However, on Wednesday, Butler Councilman Sean McNear, …

Not for nothing but a hot dog cart on Main Street is not going to survive long unless he is selling hot dogs for $10 each. This is not NYC. You need volume to make any type of money where its worthwhile unless hes just doing this for fun.   more ›

Business Owner Hot Over Dog Stand Controversy

Tom Frank said he is upset over health board's consideration of banning mobile food vendors.

Since Tommy's Franks owner Tom Frank opened his mobile hot dog stand on March 7, he thought things were going well. He's seen a steady stream of customers and he said he has followed all of the permitting rules of the Borough of Butler. But now Frank feels like he's playing catchup after learning that the Butler Board of Health has voted to amend the borough's code relating to canvassers, solicitors and peddlers to no longer allow mobile food vendors in the borough. Mayor Bob Alviene said at Tuesday's Butler Borough Council meeting that the Board of Health is concerned about childrens' safety with mobile food vendors. "This is something that I always wanted to do and I get smacked in the face," Frank said Thursday. Frank grew up in …

Kinnelon Considers Social Media for Community Messaging

Mayor asks for council's help in reviewing social media sites.

The Borough of Kinnelon is considering turning to social media more to connect with residents. The mayor and council are looking into other municipalities’ success using Facebook and Twitter during major events. Mayor Bob Collins brought up the idea at the council’s Nov. 17 meeting. “We received a letter from county officials indicating social media was helpful during the storm,” Collins said, speaking about the October snowstorm that left hundreds of Kinnelon residents without power. The borough does currently have a Twitter account (@kinnelonboro) but not a Facebook account, however, some Kinnelon organizations are on Facebook, including the Kinnelon Office of Emergency Management. The Kinnelon Police Department does not have a Facebook …

Lawyer: Ordinance Amendment Benefits Quick Chek

Butler council plans to clarify ordinance for use in highway commercial zones.

The Butler Council unanimously voted to clarify Tuesday its ordinance pertaining to allowing conditional use of limited service stations with convenience stores in the borough's Highway Commercial 1 (HC1) and 2 zones. While Borough Attorney Robert Oostdyk said the change was a mere clarification and one that should have been applied to the ordinance years ago, David Dixon, the attorney who has been making a case against the borough allowing a Quick Chek Mega Gas station to be constructed on the corner of Boonton Avenue and Route 23, argued that the council would be changing the ordinance to meet the needs of a specific Butler Land Use Board applicant. Representatives of Quick Chek and those who oppose its planned construction have been …

Borough Plans For Struble Avenue Repairs

Borough administrator said money is being put aside to repair roadway.

The Borough of Butler has a plan for repairing road conditions on Struble Avenue and has been setting money aside through a developer's agreement to fix both the surface of the road and main issues underneath. Cleary Avenue resident Sandy Bruno approached the Butler Council Tuesday to ask if anything can be done about the road. "Struble Avenue is in horrific shape," she said, describing potholes, brittle roadway and sewer main breaks. "Everything you said is correct," Councilman Bob Fox, chairman of the borough Roads Committee, said. Borough Administrator James Lampmann said he had personally spoken to several neighbors in the area of Struble Avenue and that they had agreed that rather than simply re-paving the road, it would be more …
