Butler Kickoff Site for Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run

A multi-agency police event to support special-needs athletes starts at Butler Police headquarters.

The New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will get its start in Butler on Friday, June 7. The event, held for the past 30 years, brings together police officers from a host of towns, including Butler, Kinnelon, Wayne and Pompton Lakes, who will run to raise funds to support area special-needs athletes. The torch run begins at the Butler Borough Police Department , 10 High Street, at 8:30 a.m. From there, runners move onto Park Place, right onto Main Street, right again onto Hamburg Turnpike, and then continues into Riverdale, Pequannock, Lincoln Park and Morris Plains. The officers, who hail from across the Garden State, are collecting donations to participate in the event. Every participant is expected to collect $100…

Operation TakeBack Comes to Butler April 27

Law enforcement encourages people to turn in expired and unwanted medications so they don't fall into the wrong hands.

In conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration, the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, the New Jersey National Guard and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, the Butler Police Department will host “Operation TakeBack.” The campaign will focus on the safe and anonymous collection of unwanted and/or expired medicine and seeks to educate residents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse and the easy accessibility of these drugs. On Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Borough of Butler Police Department will be open to allow the public to get rid of unused, unwanted and expired medicine. More Than 300 Arrests Made in Butler Last Year

Arrests, summonses issued down from previous year.

The Butler Police Department made 314 arrests in 2012, down by nearly 100 arrests from the year prior according to an annual summary report required for the department's accreditation. Butler Police Capt. Ciro Chimento said data was collected and sent to the state Attorney General's Office, through the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, on Wednesday. The figures included detail the past year in police activity in the Borough of Butler. In 2012, in addition to the 314 arrests (year-over-year-comparison below), 2,716 summonses of various natures were issued. Suspicious person incidents totaled 283, suspicious vehicles totaled 253 and medical emergencies reached 500. There were 48 burglaries reported in Butler in 2012 and 41 larcenies. A …

Drunk Driver Crashed Into Rock Wall, Cops Say

Police said man's alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.

A Bergenfield man was charged with DWI Friday after police said his blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit when he crashed his car on top of a rock wall on Fairview Avenue in Butler. Dean Giardini, 52, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent. He was transported to the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of $2,500 bail with no 10 percent option. Police: Escaped Prisoners Spotted in Butler

Residents are asked not to approach the two if encountered, but to call 911.

Two escaped prisoners from a Hunterdon County correctional facility were spotted in Butler Friday afternoon, police said. Butler Police said Michael Bentley, 23, of Lincoln Park, and Corey Agostarola, 21, of Pine Hill, were last seen together by a local resident in the vicinity of Maple Lake Road at approximately 2 p.m. UPDATE: Corey Agostarola was captured Friday night in Pine Hill. UPDATE: Michael Bentley was apprehended on Sunday morning in Hardyston Township. The two, along with two others who have been apprehended, escaped on Sunday from the Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility in Annandale, according to Philly.com. The two reportedly would have been eligible for parole in March, and officials say it was the second time Bentley …

Police: More Underage Drinking Laws Not Needed in Butler, Bloomingdale

Police departments see no need for additional ordinances.

In recent months, underage drinking has been a highlighted issue in the Borough of Kinnelon, with the Kinnelon Council continuing to discuss adopting an ordinance that would allow police to arrest and charge underage drinkers. However, similar problems haven’t carried over to neighboring Butler and Bloomingdale, according to police representatives from each borough. Bloomingdale Police Chief Joseph Borell told Patch that, while preventing underage drinking within the borough is always a priority, his department has always felt that it has enough tools to prevent it without adopting additional ordinances or forming an advisory committee, as has been done in Kinnelon. “While we are always concerned with underage drinking within our borough, …

Butler Police Arrest Two on Warrants

Two were arrested separately on warrants in Butler Sunday. At about 2:07 a.m., Butler police were on routine patrol on High Street when they conducted a random license plate inquiry on a 2001 Nissan and allegedly discovered an outstanding warrant for the owner, Gerald Debonte, 28, of Bloomingdale. Police said they confirmed the warrant, which was out of the Butler Municipal Court for $114, and arrested Debonte. Debonte posted bail and was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle without a properly affixed inspection sticker, police said. He was released in his own recognizance. Vernon Woman Arrested on Warrant

A 26-year-old Highland Lakes woman was arrested on a warrant from the Vernon Municipal Court for $136 on Tuesday in Butler. Nicole Hazin was transported to the Butler police station for processing and later released in her own recognizance with a ticket to appear in court in Vernon. Police were on routine patrol on Route 23 North at about 11:24 p.m. when they conducted a random license plate inquiry on the white 2010 Honda Civic Hazin was driving. Upon further investigation, police said they noticed the outstanding warrant.

Caldwell Woman Arrested on Warrant on Route 23

A 20-year-old Caldwell woman was arrested on a warrant and for driving a motor vehicle with a revoked license Sunday after Butler police said they conducted a random license plate inquiry on her car and saw her license was revoked. Heather Carrara was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, operating without proper documentation and driving with unsafe tires. Police stopped the red Volkswagen she was driving on Route 23 North at about 11:43 p.m. During a roadside investigation, police said they discovered an outstanding warrant for her arrest out of Pequannock for $500. Butler Police Find Crack Cocaine, Suspected Heroin in 'Lethargic' Man’s Car

Port Jervis man allegedly had over $4,000 in outstanding warrants.

Two men were arrested on multiple drug charges after Butler police said they found suspected heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside their vehicle on Dec. 26. Zachary Pederson, 24, of Montague, was charged with possession of marijuana and controlled dangerous substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a motor vehicle in possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to maintain a lane. John Pazereckis, 48, of Port Jervis, NY, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, but was also discovered to have several outstanding warrants for his arrest totaling $4,537, police said.
