Malfunctioning refrigerator causes blaze that spreads to the outside of the building.
Butler firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at Jiggs Corner Music Saloon Monday morning, authorities said. The Butler Police Department received numerous calls at about 11 a.m. about a fire that broke out at the bar, Capt. Ciro Chimento said. Emergency personnel discovered a refrigerator unit malfunctioned and caught on fire. The flames spread to the outside of the building. The Butler Fire Department brought the fire under control within minutes. Several neighboring businessmen battled the blaze with fire extinguishers before the fire department responded to the fire. Butler and Bloomingdale districts promise parents schools will continue to promote safe environment.
Local police officers were scheduled throughout Butler schools and Bloomingdale schools held safety assemblies Friday morning on the heels of an incident in which a threat was reported toward Butler High School on Thursday. According to a letter written by Butler Public Schools Superintendent Mario Cardinale and posted on the district's website, officials learned of the threat which was "of a more generalized and non-specific nature with no sense of immediate or imminent danger," and began alerting administrators, faculty members and parents. Five chiefs are honored in the gallery, beginning with Chief Arthur Ferris, the first department chief, who served from 1939 through 1959. Following him was Kenneth Shippee, who served from 1959 through 1960. Chief F. Earl Dean served from 1964 through 1983 and Chief Gerald J. Napoleone served from 1984 through 1996. Hamburg woman collided with car making left-hand turn from Morse Avenue.
A two-car crash on Route 23 at the intersection of Morse Avenue, in Butler, shut down several lanes of Route 23 Tuesday night around 11 p.m. Neither driver was injured but fuel from one of the cars leaked out on to the highway, prompting the Butler Volunteer Fire Department to respond in addition to police. According to Butler Police Capt. Ciro Chimento, the driver of a 2007 Pontiac, a 49-year-old Hamburg woman, was driving south on Route 23 when she collided with a 2010 Mini Cooper being driven by a 53-year-old Kinnelon woman. The Kinnelon woman was attempting to make a left-hand turn from Morse Avenue on to Route 23. The Butler Police Department made 314 arrests in 2012, down by nearly 100 arrests from the year prior according to an annual summary report required for the department's accreditation. Butler Police Capt. Ciro Chimento said data was collected and sent to the state Attorney General's Office, through the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, on Wednesday. The figures included detail the past year in police activity in the Borough of Butler. In 2012, in addition to the 314 arrests (year-over-year-comparison below), 2,716 summonses of various natures were issued. Police responded to call of woman slumped over her steering wheel to find her allegedly intoxicated.
After responding to a call of an unconscious woman in a car at Dunkin Donuts in Butler Tuesday, police said they determined the woman slumped over her steering wheel was drunk. Theresa Blair, 50, of Bloomingdale, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and issued a summons for failure to change her address, according to Butler police Capt. Ciro Chimento. Chimento said officers arrived at the parking lot of the Main Street coffee shop around 7:30 p.m. after a caller reported Blair to appear unconscious in a black Ford Mustang. Sgt. Kinnelon woman's blood alcohol concentration was nearly three times the legal limit, according to police report.
A Kinnelon woman was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after police said she was driving erratically on Route 23 Thursday, concerning other drivers, and had her clothing on inside out and backwards when her vehicle was stopped. A Bergenfield man was charged with DWI Friday after police said his blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit when he crashed his car on top of a rock wall on Fairview Avenue in Butler. Dean Giardini, 52, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent. Amalia Mirasola could face 30 years-to-life in prison after being found guilty of shooting her husband six times to death.
A state Superior Court jury found Amalia Mirasola guilty of murdering her husband, Carl Mirasola, insider their Butler home in 2010.
