Kinnelon Football's Win Could Motivate Community's Youth

Councilman said kids were inspired by Colts' 'fantastic game' in state championship.

The banner has been ordered and the rings are being chosen. Kinnelon High School's team of varsity football players are officially state champions. The Colts returned to Kinnelon Saturday afternoon, escorted by Kinnelon Volunteer Fire Co. trucks, from Kean University where they defeated New Milford in the North 1, Group 2 state championship game 26-14. If winning breeds winning, as Kinnelon High School Athletic Director Scott Rosenberg believes, then the Kinnelon athletic department and community had better start preparing for more success.  While the players were pushing themselves on the field, it was not just their parents watching. Kinnelon Councilman Jim Freda, liaison to the borough's recreation department, said Kinnelon kids who are…

First off. Congrats to the Colts for their state victory, wonderful for those kids. Second there is no need for sour grapes over the fact that you got your butt kicked in 1979. For the record the Butler Bulldogs played the Kinnelon Colts and it ended with a Butler win similar to your time in 1979. Since the schools no longer play in the same group it is impossible to know who would have gone …   more ›

Colts 'Confident' Going Into State Football Championship

Seniors proud of growth in sport throughout high school.

As Kinnelon football players gear up to play in their first state championship game ever, the team is trying to maintain normalcy through the final week of practice before the event. The sixth-seeded Colts, led by quarterback Sean Robbins, will face New Milford at Kean University at 1 p.m. in the North II Group II State Championship game. Kinnelon High School Athletic Director Scott Rosenberg said excitement has filled the hallways of the high school. He said it has reminded him of his own high school experience. "There's nothing like winning and there's nothing like when your football team is winning at school," he said. Head coach Kevin White said the proudest and most memorable moment this season was the game that got the Colts to this …

Kinnelon Girls Hoops Outlast Butler

Colts come out with last-minute win.

Both teams had chances, but it was the Kinnelon High School girls basketball team which prevailed over Butler, 51-47, in Butler Tuesday. It was a tough matchup from the start, with the teams tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter. Kinnelon attempted to seize control in the second, getting the ball inside to Andrea Dunchus, who finished with 16 points. Butler used a different approach, using its own center, Mikayla Munnigan, at the perimeter to pull Dunchus out of the paint. "She mainly stayed outside, and they tried back cuts to the basket," Dunchas said. "We just tried to stick to the gameplan and play our game." While Kinnelon entered halftime with a 20-17 lead, Butler came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, going on an …

Winter Sports Preview: Kinnelon Ice Hockey Team

Colts must overcome inexperience to succeed in tough Mennen Division.

Fielding a young team and sitting in the ultra-competitive Mennen Division, the Kinnelon High School ice hockey team and head coach Jeff Myhren have their work cut out for them in 2010-11. But while the inexperienced Colts have a tough task ahead of them, no one is willing to concede the season. In fact, it appears that this team is confident and ready to make an impact within the division. "My goal for this year is to be competitive in the Mennen Division, take home a few victories and try and win everything out of conference and get a state berth," Myhren explained last week. Already, the Colts have proven they're capable of backing up their coach, playing Chatham High to a 3-3 tie, in a game that the Colts led 3-2 with 18 seconds …
