The following is a Letter to the Editor submitted by Bloomingdale resident Debbie O'Neill. If you'd like to submit a Letter to the Editor, send it to Ellen Oxild at eoxild@optonline.net Dear Editor, Tuesday, the majority of voters in Bloomingdale sent a very clear message to the current council majority members. In supporting the election of Councilmen-elect Yazdi and D’Amato and in passing the WTB lighting project, our voters resoundingly voted for Bloomingdale’s future; a future that Mayor Dunleavy has been desperately trying to help bring to fruition but has thus far been impeded and blocked at every turn. We voted “yes” to common sense fiscal responsibility and growth, a focus on our families and youth and a return to the respect and …

Elected councilman said borough should look at cutting costs for approved lighting project.
While Democrats John D'Amato and Ray Yazdi celebrated their victories in winning the Bloomingdale Council election Tuesday night, both admitted there is hard work ahead of them come Jan. 1 when they are sworn into office. "This was the easy part," said Yazdi at the Democrats' gathering at the Morse Lakes clubhouse. According to unofficial election results provided by Borough Clerk Jane McCarthy, Yazdi and D'Amato defeated Republican candidates Ron Caputo and incumbent Council President Linda Huntley. Yazdi had 1,131 votes, D'Amato had 1,162 votes, Huntley had 693 votes and Caputo had 725 votes. Yazdi said he will work hard with his fellow councilmembers to keep tax increases at a minimum and to continue to make improvements to the borough …

Poll workers said Tuesday's election has been 'quiet.'
Cecelia DiMarria has been working at election polling locations for the past 12 years and said Tuesday's election in Kinnelon has been quiet. By 10:30 a.m., DiMarria said only 33 voters had shown up for her district at the Kinnelon Public Library. "People who see that there's a very low turnout are discouraged that people don't care enough about it to do something," she said. DiMarria said the library had seen mostly older residents in the morning. "The 18-year-olds, of course, are in school," she said. Jennifer Morrow agreed that the low turnout was not encouraging for voters. "It would be nice if it were a little more inspiring," she said. At the Kinnelon Municipal Building polling location, District 7, which covers the Lake Reality …

Voters take stand on sports betting issue.
The majority of voters at the Carey Avenue firehouse Tuesday said they were there simply to exercise their right as an American. In Butler, voters were able to vote for two uncontested borough council candidates (incumbent Ray Verdonik and Sean McNear), state Senate and Assembly candidates and vote on a referendum on whether the state should allow sports betting in Atlantic City. Tri-Boro Patch asked voters, "What inspired you to come out and vote tonight?" Diane Davison said she felt it was something she should do. "It's more of a principle I'm here," said Davidson. "It's a privelege." Dan Masin emphasized his pride for being an American in his answer. "Because I'm an American and I have that right," he said. Masin said he voted in favor …
'I believe they have common sense,' one voter said about the Democrat council candidates.
The preference of Bloomingdale voters on who they would like to serve on the borough council was unclear Tuesday afternoon as many said they voted for the two Democrats, a few said they voted Republican and one man said he split his vote. Four candidates are vying for two council seats this Election Day: Democrats Ray Yazdi and John D'Amato and Republicans incumbent Linda Huntley and Ron Caputo. Bloomingdale voters were also asked on the ballot to decide whether they feel the borough should move forward with a nearly $400,000 field lighting project at the Walter T. Bergen School. If approved, the borough would first seek grant funding to complete the project. Tri-Boro Patch spent two hours outside the Bloomingdale Firemen's Hall polling …

Debbie-Your letter is spot on. One of the problems is that some on the Council seem to be tone-deaf to what 2/3 of the voters have been expressing all along. They are not good listeners, and perhaps it is THEY who lack a sense of reality. One could particularly see that tone-deafness in Caputo's glib explanation to Patch that the vote was all about the lighting. Ridiculous! Evidently Caputo, …   more ›
