The family and friends of Omar Monroig, a Butler man who died one year ago from injuries sustained after he was struck in a hit-and-run, gathered in a parking lot Saturday near where their loved one was hit by a driver who remains unfound. Monroig was struck while crossing Tonelle Avenue in North Bergen. According to Jorge Monroig, Omar's brother and the organizer of Saturday's vigil, about 60 people gathered to honor his memory. Four North Bergen police officers were also available to assist with traffic. "We wrote on 42 balloons messages and released them," Jorge Monroig said. A local pastor also shared kind words about Omar Monroig, describing him as a wealthy man for all those who loved him in his life.

The relatives of Omar Monroig, a Butler man who died from injuries sustained after being struck while crossing a North Bergen street, will be memorializing the anniversary of his death with a vigil on Saturday. The vigil will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m in the parking lot of 5117 Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen. "Omar touched many hearts in his own special way. Eight months have gone by and the relatives of Omar Monroig, a Butler man who died eight days after being struck in a hit-and-run, said they are no closer to finding the driver who caused the crash than they were in March. The family has increased the reward offered for any information that leads to an arrest of the driver to $20,000, according to Monroig's wife, Marybell Monroig. "Our son, Nicolas, and the family are trying to bring awareness to this case," she said. "No one has come forward with any further information in regards to this accident. Kinnelon driver allegedly under the influence of alcohol, drugs.
Two hit-and-run crashes that both allegedly occurred on the same day are under investigation by Bloomingdale police. Ptl. Dan Fletcher said in a press release Wednesday that both hit-and-runs were reported on Saturday by the alleged victims. The first, at 10:35 a.m., resulted in the arrest of 50-year-old Teresa Blair, of Kinnelon, who was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, driving while intoxicated, careless driving and issued motor vehicle violations. Authorities are looking for a silver SUV with North Carolina license plates in connection with a hit-and-run accident that injured a Passaic County man and 12-year-old girl who were riding a motorcycle on Interstate 80 in Roxbury Sunday morning. Stephen Seda, 47, of Haskell, and his 12-year-old passenger were airlifted to Morristown Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to New Jersey State Trooper Christopher Kay. A silver Chevy Suburban struck the motorcycle, causing it to overturn, near mile-marker 31.3 on I-80 westbound in Roxbury Sunday shortly after 9 a.m., Kay said. A 25-year-old man from Rock Hill, N.Y., was arrested on May 27 and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) after Bloomingdale police said he reported an alleged hit-and-run that police said did not actually occur. Rick Schumacher was charged with possession of CDS in a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said Schumacher reported the alleged accident and they responded to the scene at 1:02 a.m. While speaking to Schumacher, police said they noticed signs of use of a CDS and found a small bag of suspected marijuana and several items used to ingest marijuana in his vehicle. North Bergen police are continuing an "aggressive" investigation of a hit-and-run that ultimately led to the death of a 42-year-old Butler man Sunday. Omar Monroig was crossing Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen at 11:45 p.m. on March 24 when he was struck by a driver and thrown more than 100 feet, according to NJ.com. Monroig was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where he died Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. Lt.
