You have a very talented group!” Senior Center Director Pat Yannaci commented.

Check Out the Best 'Decked' House in the Tri-Boro

We loved showcasing everyone’s holiday spirit, but Deck the House isn’t over yet. We’re still looking for the one home so spectacularly decorated that it could be the national grand prize winner of our contest. We will choose 24 finalists from all our entries across the country. Holiday Lights Glow at Butler Park

Hundreds gather near police station to watch the borough turn holiday lights on.

Despite the chilly, rainy weather, the Butler Park was packed Friday night with families waiting to see the fixtures and police station lit up for the holiday season. The North Jersey Concert Band performed holiday tunes while Butler Mayor Robert Alviene led the crowd in a countdown just after 7 p.m. Santa also drove by the event on a Butler Fire Department fire truck.

The mayor of Butler back in 1948 had a really great idea by suggesting that the strings of bright colorful light bulbs be used to decorate the then big evergreen trees in the park, on the borough hall and firehouse. Prior to that they had been strung over Main Street like tens of thousands of communities in America. Now for the 65th season the park is still a place of pride for our community. The…   more ›

Hanukkah 2012: Celebrating the Festival of Lights Locally

'Latkerama' and public menorah lighting scheduled to help families celebrate.

Saturday marks the first of eight nights of Hanukkah for the Jewish community. As Jews are preparing their menorahs, or, in Hebrew, "hanukiah," Saturday, the leaders of two local temples are reminding their congregants, and others, of the reason for the season. Rabbi Mark Finkel, of the Pine Brook Jewish Center, said Hanukkah is a reminder of religious freedom, "which we take for granted in the United States as one of our freedoms." "It was something that was rarely known in the ancient world," he said. "We see, in terms of our world today, that there is religious intolerance." Finkel said the story of Hanukkah dates back to ancient times when a group of Jews, the Maccabees, had to fight for their freedom. After returning to their temple …

Helicopter Santa to Fly Into Bloomingdale

All three boroughs schedule holiday events.

Santa Claus will not be riding a sleigh into Bloomingdale but a helicopter instead as the man in red will land in the borough on Dec. 9. The holiday festivities will be held at the Walter T. Bergen School beginning at 2:30 p.m. Bloomingdale Recreation Director Gail Galbraith described the event. "Music, crafts, carnival games, characters, horse and buggy (weather permitting) and, of course, Santa in a helicopter!" she said. Butler will be hosting its own park lighting event at the Butler Park on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to talk to Santa and Mrs. Claus and see the park illuminated.  Kinnelon will also be hosting a holiday celebration this year and will invite residents to the Kinnelon Municipal Building for refreshments…

Kristen, I was right, you are the Grinch. Holy crap you sure have issues. Just let it go already. Sounds like you have a problem sharing with others, even on Christmas. I bet you don't like airplanes that fly over your house and use your air space. As I said before.... Send me address and I will refund your portion of your tax dollars that were spent on the event.   more ›

5 Gifts Grandparents Will Love

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. For grandparents, that number might be a little higher.

Here's the first thing you need to know about holiday shopping for grandparents: We just can't get enough pictures of our grandchildren.  Whether they're printed on Kodak paper or popped in as wallpaper on our iPad screens, grandparents love, love, love looking at those precious faces. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking in the right direction: These are available on-line through sites like Snapfish.com, or you can order them when you take your digital images or film to Walgreen's, CVS, Rite Aid, or wherever you order prints. My personal favorite is a 4x6 album that fits into my purse. (Go ahead, ask me about my grandchildren.) Help the kids make a frame using a craft-store kit, or simple materials like heavy cardboard or Popsicle …

I love my Grandma very much, but like you HSR and Patti Urbano - I don't think she has room for any more pictures. Haha. As much as she loves them! And as far as homemade cards? All of my cousins and I are well into our 20s....So I really don't think that's an option. Heh. Maybe for her Great-Grands. I really don't think there can be a generic "Grandparent Christmas Shopping List." Especially …   more ›

Black Friday Tradition Changes in North Jersey

Earlier and staggered store openings result in shorter lines, less frenzy the day after Thanksgiving.

Varied opening and sale times at retailers for the Black Friday rush seemed to spread out shoppers throughout North Jersey’s biggest stores this weekend. This year marked a new marketing tactic—more retailers opened Thanksgiving night. While some stores bought into the new trend, others stuck to the traditional early-morning opening times Friday, while others chose to open at 7 or 8 a.m. And, the different opening times gave shoppers a lot of options, and the ability to hit multiple stores. Long nighttime lines awaited shoppers at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall, which saw customers skipping Thanksgiving dinner to line up almost a day before some stores’ 8 and 9 p.m. openings. The line at the Walmart in Watchung started forming at 1 p.m. …
