Interested volunteers should apply by April 22.
The Kinnelon Recreation Commission is looking to fill an alternate position. The commission has seven members and two alternates who are able to vote when other members are not able or available. Additionally, a professional director is appointed to the Kinnelon Recreation Commission by the mayor and council. The commission hosts meetings open to the public to discuss and vote on recreation issues. Meetings are typically held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Those interested in applying to serve as an alternate on the commission should send a resume to Deputy Borough Clerk Karen Iuele at kiuele@kinnelonboro.org by April 22.

7 borough families will host high school students from around the world this summer.
Seven Kinnelon families will be bringing a global experience into their homes this summer when they host international high school students from Spain, China, Italy, Germany and France. The families will be participating in an international student host program run by EF Language Travel. "We are a non-profit that brings international high school students to NJ each summer in an effort to break down barriers of culture, language, and geography," Mary Ramsden, a Kinnelon resident who works for EF Language Travel, said. As part of the program, the international students spend Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. studying at Drew University in Madison. Incumbents Stephen Cobell, Jim Freda to seek re-election.
Three Republicans will vie for two Kinnelon Council seats that will be open this November during the June 4 primary. Incumbents Stephen Cobell and Jim Freda both filed nominating petitions by the 4 p.m. Monday deadline, according to Acting Borough Clerk Karen Iuele. Additionally, Robert W. Overturned car reported near Sunrise Terrace.
A Kinnelon man was charged with disorderly conduct and DWI Thursday morning after police said he "became threatening and lunged at" a police officer before being placed under arrest. Matthew Luisi, 22, was additionally issued summonses for failure to exhibit insurance documents and failure to maintain a lane. He was transported to Morristown Medical Center following his arrest just after 2 a.m. for an evaluation. He was later released and is awaiting a court date. According to Kinnelon Police Detective Sgt. David Crouthamel, Luisi was found standing on the roadway near an overturned silver BMW in the middle of Boonton Avenue, near Sunrise Terrace. More than 300 teachers and students participated in 'French Day' event.
A group of Kinnelon High School students won second place in a Montclair State University film competition March 1 that included secondary school students from New Jersey and Pennsylvania during the university's "French Day." The event was sponsored by the Language and Humanities Departments and the film competition asked students to demonstrate the French language through depiction of places where French is spoken in the world today. Sophie Tiajoloff, Andreas Goergen, Aemin Becker and Toby Arguello participated on behalf of KHS and were led by French teacher Sophie Adams. A road does not have to be slippery to seem dangerous to some drivers and even with warmer weather on the horizon, some of the main roads in the borough may not seem as safe as others. Recently, a report has designated Route 46 as the most dangerous road in Morris County. Now we want to know what you think is the most dangerous main road in Kinnelon. Residents, non-residents can drop off medicine inside police lobby.
For the second year, the Kinnelon Police Department will be offering a place for residents to bring their unwanted medications without any questions inside the police department lobby. Medications can be dropped off without question in the MedReturn box right inside the front door. The medication dropbox is not only open to Kinnelon residents but anyone who has unwanted medication they wish to dispose of. Police will not be accepting needles, infectious waste or aerosol cans through the box. The Butler Police Department also participates annually in a similar unwanted medication drop-off program as part of "Operation Take Back New Jersey" in September. Purchases of more than $1,500 were made with the card in the tri-boro area and Wayne.
A Kinnelon man was charged with credit card fraud and theft by deception on Friday after police said an investigation revealed he had stolen and used the credit card of his roommate. Matthew Supel, 20, was sent to the Morris County jail in lieu of $20,000 bail, according to Kinnelon police Lt. John Schwartz. Police said the credit card was reported stolen on Feb. 5 around 3:30 p.m. The owner came into the police station and said that he had paid off the balance of his Citi card on November 10, 2012, but that he had received information indicating $1,569.29 had been charged on the card. Superintendent said officers should serve as comfort to parents, not a concern.
Police officers will be increasing their presence in Kinnelon schools, Interim Superintendent of Schools Diane DiGiuseppe announced Thursday night. Elected officials and school leaders have been meeting with police to talk about the safety and security of Kinnelon's youth since the days that followed the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. in which 20 children were killed. At a recent Kinnelon Council meeting, Mayor Robert Collins said the protocols and procedures already in place in the school district were being reviewed again to ensure safety of the entire school community. Kinnelon's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will begin training new members on Feb. 5. Kinnelon residents who expressed interest in joining the group after Superstorm Sandy will come together at the Kiel Avenue firehouse at 7 p.m. to learn about what the volunteer group does before, after and during emergency situations. Even those who did not express interest yet but are now thinking about joining are encouraged to attend. The training program will be six consecutive weeks long and will include textbook education, hands-on training and presentations from guest speakers. At the conclusion of the training, participants will be certified to be able to assist in emergency events like Sandy. Those interested in taking the training …
