Game ended after Kinnelon scored enough runs to invoke mercy rule.
The North Jersey Baseball and Softball League Kinnelon Colts 14U softball team won the Kinnelon Xtreme 14U Tournament with a commanding 10-2 win over the Parsippany ICE at Kinnelon Recreation Park in Butler last Friday, according to a Youth1 report. Both the Colts and the ICE went into the championship game with a 4-0 record in tournament play. Despite the lopsided score, strong performances were shown by both teams' pitchers: The Colts' Alexa Saccomanno, and Parsippany’s Caitlin Brennan and relievers Jenna Waldsteadt and Nicole Ruggiero. Kinnelon had the hottest bats, thanks to Saccomanno, Lainey Lewis, Maddy Ledwith, Daniella Burnett and Jessie Ratz. Emily Carlos and Elisa Feola of the ICE showed their stuff in the fourth inning of…

After Kinnelon took an early lead, the Chatham Cougars came back to win
The Chatham girls swim team was looking for an undefeated season and the opportunity to win their third state title in a row. In their way was Kinnelon, whose only loss this year came at the hands of Chatham. Kinnelon was sent home again as the Cougars won the state title Saturday at the College of New Jersey. Kinnelon won three of the first four events and went into the break with a 33-29 advantage. But after the slow start, Chatham rallied to defend their title. "We knew that Kinnelon was strong in the beginning and we knew we would probably be behind going into the 50-yard freestyle," said Chatham coach Frank DiGiacomo. "But we knew we would start making up the points around there." "I have to give it to Kinnelon, they were really good…

The girls of Kinnelon High School's swim team will face Chatham in state championship meet.
After another successful season, the Kinnelon High School girls swim team is headed to the final round of state championships this weekend. Kinnelon High School Athletic Director Scott Rosenberg said there's something special about this year's team. "They have an intrinsic motivation unlike many I’ve seen over the years in high school athletics," he said. Kinnelon will face the Chatham High School girls swim team, a team that defeated the Colts earlier in the season. Chatham girls won the final round of the NJSIAA Group Tournament, Public B last week against Haddonfield, the same team they defeated in 2012 for the state championship. The meet for the state title will be held Saturday at 12:15 p.m. at The College of New Jersey. Chatham swim…

Borough offiicials congratulate football players, honor team with plaque.
It took 50 years, but the Colts got there. As a lineup of guys, some dressed in Kinnelon Colts jackets, stood before Mayor Robert Collins at Thursday's Kinnelon Council meeting to be honored for their achievement in winning a state championship game against New Milford, the mayor explained just what an accomplishment the win was, not just for the players but for the borough. This year's team was the first in Kinnelon High School's history to bring the program to the state level, let alone win the game. "You guys did something for the town as well as for yourselves," Collins said. "You have us proud in a very unique way." The varsity football players, who have been playing as a team for years, were confident going into the game at Kean …

Football players to unveil first state title banner during basketball game.
The Kinnelon Colts varsity football team will proudly hang their state championship banner-the first the school's football program has ever received-in the gymnasium Friday. Kinnelon High School Athletic Director Scott Rosenberg said the players, coaches, fans and school community will have a banner-raising ceremony at half-time of the girls basketball game around 7:30 p.m. The Colts snagged their first state championship title in December after defeating New Milford 26-14 at Kean University. The team had five interceptions in the game. The community came together to support the Colts before and after the win, with local officials commending the players and describing them as "role models" to youth sports participants in Kinnelon.

Councilman said kids were inspired by Colts' 'fantastic game' in state championship.
The banner has been ordered and the rings are being chosen. Kinnelon High School's team of varsity football players are officially state champions. The Colts returned to Kinnelon Saturday afternoon, escorted by Kinnelon Volunteer Fire Co. trucks, from Kean University where they defeated New Milford in the North 1, Group 2 state championship game 26-14. If winning breeds winning, as Kinnelon High School Athletic Director Scott Rosenberg believes, then the Kinnelon athletic department and community had better start preparing for more success. While the players were pushing themselves on the field, it was not just their parents watching. Kinnelon Councilman Jim Freda, liaison to the borough's recreation department, said Kinnelon kids who are…

District, high school administrators prepare for what they hope is a win at football state championship game.
With two days left until the Colts take the field against New Milford in the state championship game on Saturday, Kinnelon High School has already booked two bus loads of fans to cheer on the players. Saturday's game will be extraordinary, win or lose, for the Colts, as Kinnelon High School Principal Dr. Wayne Merckling said it is the first time in the program's history the school's football team has made it this far. Merckling described the team's success and placement in the state championship game as "a work in progress" since 1963, the first year the school had participated in interscholastic varsity football. "We had a conference title in the early 80s and now, 30 years later, our hope is these young men will finally add a state …
