Tuesday is the last day to register to vote in the June 4 primary election, where Tri-Boro municipal council races are the only local contests. The primary election race for two available Bloomingdale Council seats will be uncontested in June. The action will come for the November general election, when Democrats Dawn Hudson and Anthony Costa take on Republican incumbent Linda Shortman and her running mate, newcomer Albert Miller for two three-year seats. The Community Emergency Response Team was instrumental in helping residents after Hurricane Sandy.
Kinnelon Mayor Robert Collins and Adam Barish, the head of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), congratulated 13 new graduates of the CERT training program at the April 18 meeting. "The CERT team was terrific for Sandy and we've been called out for a few other weather events," Barish said. The volunteers generally provide assistance to police and fire departments, and helped open shelters and provide food for those affected by the hurricane. When Sandy hit, there were 10 people on the team, which Barish said left them spread a little thin. "We were kind of limited," Barish said. The Kinnelon Recreation Commission is looking to fill an alternate position. The commission has seven members and two alternates who are able to vote when other members are not able or available. Additionally, a professional director is appointed to the Kinnelon Recreation Commission by the mayor and council. The commission hosts meetings open to the public to discuss and vote on recreation issues. Meetings are typically held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Those interested in applying to serve as an alternate on the commission should send a resume to Deputy Borough Clerk Karen Iuele at kiuele@kinnelonboro.org by April 22.

Three Republicans will vie for two Kinnelon Council seats that will be open this November during the June 4 primary. Incumbents Stephen Cobell and Jim Freda both filed nominating petitions by the 4 p.m. Monday deadline, according to Acting Borough Clerk Karen Iuele. Additionally, Robert W. Kinnelon will host parade on Memorial Day and honor those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan on Veterans Day.
Kinnelon Councilman Dan O'Dougherty announced preliminary plans at Thursday evening's council meeting for this year's festivities for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. "On Memorial Day this year, we are going to have the 'Field of Freedom,' which is going to be flags that are going to be posted with an eight-foot post and a five-foot flag in a roll like they do at Arlington Cemetery," he said. O'Dougherty said that the "Field of Freedom" will take place in front of the municipal building. As part of the program, residents have the opportunity to purchase a full-sized flag for $35 to honor a veteran in memoriam. The flags will be placed on the circle in front of the municipal building. Five officers expected to retire in next two years.
Kinnelon Councilman Gary Moleta revealed plans at Thursday's council meeting to amp up the Kinnelon police force in coming years. "The chief is requesting we look at hiring in the future because we may be losing five officers within the next few years," he said. "We have to seriously look at a process being put into place so that we can fill in these roles." Moleta said the borough should consider that five officers will likely be retiring within the next two years. "It's something we really have to look at with a department of only 16, which is, as far as I'm concerned, a bit shorthanded based on economic times and whatnot," Moleta said. Mayor thanks Scouts for their service to the community.
Two new Eagle Scouts, Brennan Weiss and Benjamin Wasserman, were commended for their community service and projects leading to the Eagle achievement during the Jan. 17 Kinnelon Council meeting. Kinnelon Mayor Bob Collins said that achieving Eagle ranking is "a symbol of what a young man has done and what a young man will be." "I just think that it's an incredible honor," he said.

Police issued more than 1,700 summonses, animal incidents and burglaries included in report.
Kinnelon police issued more than 1,700 summonses in 2012, according to an annual report provided to borough officials. Councilman Gary Moleta read statistics from the report during a recent Kinnelon Council meeting. The meeting prior, Mayor Robert Collins praised the police officers for their work on a daily basis and particularly during Superstorm Sandy. "This year had its challenges," Kinnelon Police Chief John Finkle said. According to Moleta, 111 adults were arrested last year while 27 juveniles were arrested. Kinnelon's newest firehouse praised by borough officials.
With Kinnelon's newest firehouse now completed on Boonton Avenue, the borough council formally accepted the facility by resolution at Thursday night's council meeting. Former Mayor Glenn Sisco thanked the council for giving the fire company "a facility that we're extremely proud of." He said the fire company had been asking for a new Co. 2 firehouse for so long-12 years, Councilman Dan O'Dougherty later remarked-but that it had never before now come to fruition. "We have tried for years to get funding and the funding just wasn't there," Sisco said. Before the new firehouse was built, the previous firehouse stood in its place since 1968. Borough offiicials congratulate football players, honor team with plaque.
It took 50 years, but the Colts got there. As a lineup of guys, some dressed in Kinnelon Colts jackets, stood before Mayor Robert Collins at Thursday's Kinnelon Council meeting to be honored for their achievement in winning a state championship game against New Milford, the mayor explained just what an accomplishment the win was, not just for the players but for the borough. This year's team was the first in Kinnelon High School's history to bring the program to the state level, let alone win the game. "You guys did something for the town as well as for yourselves," Collins said. "You have us proud in a very unique way."
