Teenage Survivors Raise Thousands of Dollars to Combat Cancer

Morgan Coutts and Natalie Marchand were diagnosed with cancer when they were young. The girls are heading up a team for the annual Relay for Life fundraiser at Pequannock High School.

Two Kinnelon teenagers are still waging a personal war against cancer years after beating the disease. Morgan Coutts and Natalie Marchand, both 17, have raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society as part of the annual Pompton Valley Relay for Life fundraiser. The girls have raised $6,000 so far this year. They raised $14,000 last year. Coutts was diagnosed with brain cancer when she was 2. Marchard was diagnosed with leukemia a week before she turned 7. Doctors gave Coutts a 10 percent chance to live. “I just want everyone to keep believing that one day we’re going to find a cure,” Coutts said. “The most important thing is to never give up hope, to never stop believing.” Marchard said that Relay for Life is important for …

Students Get a Feel for Different Vocations at Metlife Stadium

Field trip was part of Financial and Career Planning curriculum.

A group of Kinnelon High School students got a taste of the various vocations that are necessary for the New York Jets and Giants to play football. Students in Financial and Career Planning classes at the school visited MetLife Stadium recently to expose them to the many financial business operations and jobs needed to get the teams onto the field every week. “I try to bring a little bit of the real world into the lessons to connect what they’re learning in the classroom to everyday life,” said Dafna Garrahy, a business education teacher. Students toured the 82,000-seat facility and learned about the different types of vocations available at the stadium after Garrahy and her colleague, Anna Ellington, took them on the trip. “They learned …

Andretta Celebrates Discus Win, Gets Ready for Nationals

Kinnelon High School standout is one of the top 50 discus throwers in the country.

Troy Andretta couldn’t be happier. The Kinnelon senior won the discus competition at the Morris County Track and Field Championships this week. “It meant so much for me to do well,” Andretta said. “I’m so happy, not just for myself, but for the people who helped me get there.” And that’s where the real story about Andretta is: his humility. Andretta, who not only won the county championship for the discus, has qualified to compete at the New Balance Nationals in June. He will compete in the discus, hammer throw, and shot put in the national competition. He is one of the top 50 discus competitors in the country. “I want to get that state sectional title,” said Andretta, a University of Mommouth commit, who is quick to thank his family, …

Kinnelon Grad Continues Winning Ways at Air Force Academy

Lacrosse player Mike Crampton helps take the Air Force Falcons to victory.

A Kinnelon resident was part of the effort that led the U.S. Air Force Academy Falcons lacrosse team to a 16-12 win over Geneva, N.Y.'s Hobart College Statesmen Saturday afternoon at the military team's home stadium. Kinnelon High School graduate Mike Crampton, a junior at the Air Force Academy in Colorado, scored three goals to achieve a hat trick for the Falcons in the season ender.  Crampton's hat trick was just part of the game's action, which offered sloppy play—including nine turnovers—in the first period, but became hotly contested in the second. Junior Erik Smith of Colorado earned a career-topping four goals, sophomore Ryland de Pol of Maryland landed a hat trick and Pennsylvanian Keith Dreyer, a sophomore, landed a personal best …

You can thank the spineless BOE that rolled over and played dead and spoonfed the KEA! The citizens that do vote (usually seniors) need to be better educated about the candidates, heck, we need more qualified people to get involved and citizens to vote-if you don't vote, you have no say! It seems quite a few board members are only there for "THEIR" kids and don't think of the majority of the …   more ›

Kinnelon Trackster Signs Scholarship Deal with Monmouth University

KHS senior Troy Andretta this year found a new coach, a new sport and a new road to college.

Great things are on the horizon for Kinnelon High School senior Troy Andretta. The 18-year-old, one of the best shot putters and discus throwers in Morris County, according to his KHS track coach, Anthony San Filippo, is seeing four years of hard work begin to pay off: Andretta, who also plays football, recently accepted a scholarship offer from Monmouth University to compete in weight throw. His signing ceremony took place Wednesday morning. "To say that I am proud of my son, Troy, is an understatement," said his mother, Stacey Andretta. "He has worked hard throughout his athletic career." That career, said the teen, was inspired by his dad. "I would say that my father influenced me the most to compete in track and field," Andretta said…

Kinnelon High School Academic Achievement Higher Than Other NJ Schools

Report shows school outperforms 19 percent of schools educating students of similar demographics in academics.

While Kinnelon High School fully met its target of academic achievement in the 2011-12 school year, new data released by the New Jersey Department of Education shows the school is lagging behind its school peers in the area. The data, which includes a new peer-to-peer comparison format, was released by the state on Wednesday. The new NJ School Performance Reports not only compare districts and schools to others in the state, but also to "peer" districts with students of similar demographic characteristics, such as the percentage of students who are in special education programs, limited English proficiency programs or who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Morris County schools in Kinnelon's peer group include West Morris Mendham High …

The problem with the schools lies in the community. They show little to no support over student responsibility and take no blame for student failures. Sure go ahead and blame teacher, board of Ed, super intendant, and anyone else you wish, but yourselves. Everyone needs to pitch in if we want the school to succeed. Instead of complaining about the report or how Honors classes have more "rigor" …   more ›
