Drunken Driver Flipped Hummer Over Rt. 23 Barrier On to Car, Cops Say

Vernon man hospitalized after SUV landed on his Volkswagen's roof.

A Vernon man was taken to Chilton Hospital Sunday morning after police said a drunken driver flipped his Hummer over the Route 23 North barrier, landing on the man's Volkswagen. Alex B. Malaquti, 19, of Hewitt, was charged with driving while intoxicated and issued a summons for reckless driving, according to a release from Kinnelon Police Lt. John Schwartz. Schwartz said Sgt. Joseph Fiduccia and Ptl. Nicholas Cifelli responded to a motor vehicle accident call on Route 23 just before 2:30 a.m. to find a 1996 Volkswagen with extensive front damage in the middle of the northbound lane of traffic and a 2003 Hummer flipped over on its roof about 100 yards away in the southbound lanes of the highway. Smoke Rise North Gate Entrance Will Be Closed Tuesday

New York Susquehanna rail road workers will be doing maintenance upgrades on tracks, police said.

The Smoke Rise North Gate entrance will be closed Tuesday from about 6 a.m. until about 2 p.m., according to Kinnelon police. The gate will be closed while workers from the New York Susquehanna and Western Railway do maintenance work on railroad tracks in the vicinity of the gate's entrance. The work will affect the North Gate entrance only, police said, but the exit will remain open.

Branchville Woman Arrested on Marijuana Charges

The following arrest information was supplied by the Kinnelon Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Branchville woman was arrested on marijuana charges in Kinnelon Monday after police said they stopped the vehicle she was a passenger in on Route 23 for having a cracked windshield. Kendrea Devine, 22, was charged with possession of marijuna, possession of drug paraphernalia and issued a summons for possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle. According to police, the vehicle was stopped at 3:38 p.m. by Ptl. Keith Kelly who spoke to the driver of the 2000 Honda, Michael Smith, 21, of Wantage. Police said Kelly allegedly smelled a strong odor of burnt marijuana and upon questioning Smith and Devine, both admitted to using marijuana in the car previously. West Milford Man Arrested on Warrants Saturday

Police said man was allegedly unable to present identification.

A 21-year-old West Milford man was arrested on two warrants in Kinnelon on Route 23 South Saturday after police pulled over the vehicle he was a passenger in for allegedly having suspended registration. The passenger, Richard D. Maiola, was arrested on one warrant out of Ringwood and another out of West Milford totaling $1,700. The owner, Crystal Kennedy, 20, of Ogdensburg, was issued summonses for having suspended registration and failure to produce documentation. According to police, the vehicle, a 1999 Chevrolet, was stopped by Sgt. Christopher Burns at 11:26 a.m. Police said Kennedy told Burns that she knew her registration was suspended and that she was attempting to work it out with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Cops: Wife Tried to Stop Impede Husband's Arrest

Woman told police she hadn't seen her husband in a week, but police said he was allegedly found in a bedroom of the home.

A Kinnelon man and his wife were arrested on separate charges Saturday morning after the wife allegedly attempted to obstruct police from arresting her husband on a traffic warrant. Police arrived at their Monarch Way home at about 9:30 a.m., to serve James P. Black Jr., 38, a traffic warrant. When they arrived at the door, police said they were met by Dawn M. Black, 30, who allegedly told police that she had not seen her husband in a week and that she was home alone with her son. Police said a further investigation led them to find the man in a bedroom and no child in the home. Heroin Found in Car of Alleged Route 23 Shoplifters

Police said men were allegedly taking items listed on old receipts.

Kinnelon police stopped two men Friday afternoon who were allegedly attempting to shoplift from several Route 23 businesses by taking items found on discarded receipts and attempting to return them to stores. Police said both men were also allegedly found to be under the influence of heroin. German M. Florez, 39, of Port Jervis, and William G. Totten III, 22, of Dingman’s Ferry, Pa., were both charged with shoplifting, being under the influence of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. Ptl. Cops: Man Buys Jewelry With Stolen Credit Cards

Police said jeweler became suspicious when thief pretended to be a rapper.

Kinnelon police arrested 24-year-old Alden Wing, of West Milford, Friday on charges of credit card fraud, identity theft, theft by deception, possession of stolen property and forgery. According to police, Wing had allegedly stolen two credit cards from his grandparents while living in West Milford and used them to purchase more than $22,000 worth of jewelry from Kinnelon Jewelry, over a two-month period. Police said the jeweler became suspicious after Wing allegedly told the jeweler he was a rapper and needed the jewelry for his entourage. Det. Sgt. David Crouthamel, along with investigators from Bank of America and Chase Bank, investigated the incident and arrested Wing on Friday. He was processed at the Bergen County jail, where police …

Police Rescue Woman From Car Stuck on Rock Wall

Lincoln Park driver charged with DWI.

A 22-year-old Lincoln Park man was arrested and charged with DWI Friday after police said he was involved in an accident that left a female in the vehicle balancing on a 3-foot high rock wall. The accident occurred around 2:11 a.m. near 9 Boonton Ave. Police said they were able to bring the female out of the car and to safety by tying the vehicle to Ptl. Christopher Mucci’s patrol car, with help from Sgt. Joseph Napoletano. The Kinnelon Volunteer Fire Co. also responded to the scene and stabilized the vehicle, in addition to helping remove the passenger. Police said the man, Matthew G. Police: K9 Found Narcotics in Car on Route 23

Police said woman allegedly admitted to being addicted to pills.

A Nutley woman was arrested on drug charges on Jan. 23 in Kinnelon after a Pequannock Police Department K9 unit allegedly determined there were narcotics in her vehicle, including 20 pills of Naproxen, Opana and Oxycodone. Kristin Daly, 23, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and issued summonses for use of a cell phone while driving, having an obstructed windshield and having a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle. Poll: Does Drinking Law Infringe on Citizens' Rights?

Some feel underage ordinance violates property owners' rights.

Since Kinnelon's Underage Drinking Ordinance Advisory Committee began meeting this month, Committee Member Lila Helu has repeated her opinion that she feels the ordinance, which would allow police to arrest and charge underage individuals found drinking on private property, may infringe upon a property owner's rights. But when asked why she feels that way, Helu has not been specific, stating only that she feels that when a police officer has the ability to enter a person's property even with probable cause, that right has been abolished. Kinnelon Police Lt. John Schwartz has told Helu and other committee members that police already have the right to enter property with probable cause, but not without it. This is insane. If it were my child this man would need 24 hr police protection. It's time the State of New Jersey formed it's own Underage Drinking Ordinance Advisory Committee and got every town and city on the same page.
