Scouts Honor: Boys Recognized for Sandy Help

Bloomingdale scouts filled hundreds of sand bags for residents, business owners.

Two Bloomingdale Boy Scouts were honored Tuesday for their assistance in preparing sand bags before Sandy made its way to the borough. The boys, David Synol and Brendan Shoemaker, filled hundreds of sand bags at the Bloomingdale Department of Public Works yard for residents and business owners to pick up and place outside their doors to prevent flooding. The sand bags were offered free of charge to those who wanted them and many Main Street business owners said they felt more prepared for the storm because of them. The Scouts, from Troop 86, worked with Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers to fill and distribute the bags on Oct. 28 as many homeowners began preparing for the storm. More than 600 bags were filled and given out…

Good Character Rewarded in SRD Students

Principal Sherri Glaab read names of students selected by teachers for demonstrating respect and responsibility.

Several Samuel R. Donald School students were honored for showing good character during the Bloomingdale Board of Education's Dec. 10 meeting. According to Principal Sherri Glaab, students are chosen each marking period for demonstrating different character values. This year, the school implemented a new program, Growing Together, where the students who are recognized for the character awards will have their names added to a tree mural that will be part of a creativity garden the school is building in the courtyard. As more children are honored, more names will be added to the tree. The following students were honored this marking period: Respect: Nicholas Okken, Christopher Ermilio, Samuel Corny, Amanda Dellagicoma, Ethan Marciano, Kevin …

85-Foot Christmas Tree Survives Sandy, Keeps Woman's Memory Alive

Bloomingdale man lights up Norway Spruce every year as tribute to late wife.

Staring at the lights glimmering on the 85-foot Christmas tree in his front yard, Thomas Kroncke did not want to say the word some might use to describe why his tree survived Superstorm Sandy while others just as big on his block were uprooted. The word, which he stopped himself from saying as he reached the end of his thought, was "miracle." Considering the history of the tree, some might even call it a Christmas miracle. Kroncke's giant Norway Spruce named "Sally K." has been lit up every year for the past 10 years. Sally Kroncke, Kroncke's wife, initially had lights put on the tree as a surprise for her husband. After Sally died of cancer several years ago, Kroncke has kept the tradition alive in her honor. But this year, Sandy almost …

Music Made Easy for All Students Through Stonybrook Club

Band director encourages creativity and expression through percussion instruments.

Music, like math, is a universal language. But it does come second to some. Stonybrook School band teacher Alan Tedesco is hoping to make it easier for all students to grasp through a new club: the Stonybrook Drum Circle. "I started the Stonybrook Drum Circle last year as an outlet for students who demonstrated an interest in rhythm and percussion, but have a hard time understanding," he said. "Drum circle was designed to move at a pace students can comprehend and feel a great deal of reward from the experience." Stonybrook Drum Circle participants meet once a week for the entire year. During the allotted time, about 45 minutes, the students take turns making up their own rhythms, performing the sounds for others and teaching them the …
