JCP&L Upgrading Emergency Communications

Utility installing components at operations center in Morristown.

JCP&L is taking steps to improve its ability to communicate with first responders during a large-scale emergency. The utility will install components of the New Jersey Preparedness Emergency Communication Network at its regional dispatching operations in Morristown and Red Bank, spokesman Ron Morano said Thursday. The facilities manage the daily work on the company's electrical system and provide coordination when repair crews are dispatched during widespread power outages. “Participating in this system will enhance our ability to share real-time critical information with our customers, communities and first responders during emergency situations,” JCP&L President Don Lynch said in a release. “Joining this system is one of the many things …

Sandy Lessons Should Steer Rebuilding Effort

Politicians have to make tough—perhaps expensive—decisions and need to start taking action.

It’s been three weeks since Superstorm Sandy blew through New Jersey, and past time to begin figuring out how to minimize losses the next time. Some solutions involve building; some, doing the opposite. Just as the attacks of Sept. 11 brought talk of rebuilding, there have been vows to restore the shore back to Oct. 28, 2012, as if nothing had happened. That would be a huge and costly mistake. It is not politically correct to say that at least some of what was destroyed should not be rebuilt. But it’s the truth. Barrier islands are aptly named. They are supposed to serve as barriers for the shoreline. When a major storm like Sandy or Irene hits, they will take the brunt of it and provide some measure of protection for the mainland. They …

Outages Drop as JCP&L Adds More Manpower

Utility company expects most customers will be restored by Saturday evening.

An increase in manpower will help JCP&L restore most New Jersey outages by Saturday evening, according to a statement released Friday afternoon. An additional 1,200 line workers joined the nearly 7,000 workers already on the ground in New Jersey on Friday. After winter storm Athena caused JCP&L's power outage numbers to increase by more than 100,000 from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning, both the company and Gov. Chris Christie have said Sunday should bring the state's residents relief. JCP&L reported Friday at noon that 163,309 of its nearly 1.1 million customers were without power. However, that number dropped to 110,468 by Friday night at 10 p.m. Municipalities in Patch's coverage area in Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Passaic and …

UPDATED: 5 to 7 More Days Before Power Restoration

Butler Electric is continuing to work to restore service, but feeder line remains down.

Tri-Boro residents could be without power for a while longer. Butler Electric is working feverishly to restore service to areas with large numbers of outages. Restoration could take 5 to 7 more days, Kinnelon's Office of Emergency Management said Wednesday morning. Crews are making "great progress" clearing debris and restoring wires, however the feeder from JCP&L is still uncertain, the OEM statement said. Even when power is restored, gas and fuel will continue to be an issue as local refineries are under water, the OEM statement said. Most residents have been without power since a feeder line failure in Butler Monday. Once JCP&L restores power to the Butler sub-stations a large majority of Butler Electric customers will have power. Click…

Sandy Knocked Out Power to 87% of Morris County, OEM Says

'Everyone's overwhelmed,' said Jeffrey S. Paul, coordinator for the county Office of Emergency Management.

Tropical Storm Sandy knocked out power to about 87 percent of an electric company's customers in Morris County, the Morris County Office of Emergency Management coordinator said Tuesday. Along with the widespread power outages, a "tremendous amount of hazards" exist on roads throughout the county, and officials are encouraging the public to stay home so crews can address issues, including down trees, wires and utility poles, on main thoroughfares, said Jeffrey S. Paul, coordinator for the county OEM. "We did get hit pretty hard," Paul said. "Everyone's doing a great job. Certainly everyone's overwhelmed." Paul said Jersey Central Power & Light had about 170,000 customers in Morris County without power on Tuesday, including more than 20,000…

No Power in Tri-Boro After Butler Electric Feeder Line Fails

No estimate when outages will be restored, several roads closed in Kinnelon.

All Butler Electric customers lost power Monday night as Tropical Storm Sandy ripped through the tri-boro. The JCP&L transmission line that feeds Butler Electric failed Monday night, according to an alert released by the utility company. The company said there is no estimate when power will be restored. Butler Electric serves nearly all of the tri-boro and parts of Riverdale and West Milford. In addition to the outages, Fayson Lakes, Kinnelon, Kakeout and Sleepy Hollow roads as well as Cabot and Old Cow Pasture lanes have been closed, Kinnelon Police said. A shelter has been opened at Pearl R. Miller School, according to a Nixle alert released Monday at about 8:30 p.m.

Mayor Collins Thanks Community for Pulling Together

Kinnelon Borough Council recaps storm impact on municipal services

Kinnelon Mayor Robert Collins thanked residents at Thursday's Borough Council for their positive attitude during the snowstorm on October 29 that rocked the northeast, caused power outages and downed trees. "I just want to extend a public thanks to our residents, because Kinnelon does things in a really positive manner on so many different fronts, and it shows when there are storms," Collins said. The committee reports recapped the storm's impact on Public Safety and Public Works & Utilities, and also highlighted the efforts of municipal employees.   Collins reported that local dispatchers handled over 1,400 telephone calls, which was more than during Hurricane Irene. He said that the borough superintendent was called in to remove a fairly…
