Hundreds Walk to Remember 9/11 by Candlelight

Bloomingdale-Butler ceremony honors those who lost their lives and celebrates American pride.

In a commemoration event that was, at times, somber and at times filled with American pride, the communities of Butler and Bloomingdale came together Tuesday night for the annual Candlelight Walk. Participants gathered at Bloomingdale Borough Hall and walked through the borough to Butler Park, where mayors, musical performers and speakers memorialized the attacks on America on September 11, 2001.

It's not a contest to see who has the biggest turout but something to memorialize those who perished. Locally in the towns of our area we have many good and great members of all of our volunteer service organizations. For reasons that I will not go into I was not able to make this one. I do try to be there on Memorial Day which is for giving rembrances of all those who have died in the service of…   more ›

Students to observe moment of silence in honor of victims.

The tri-boro will commemorate 11 years since the World Trade Center attacks throughout the day and evening Tuesday. Schools will teach children the meaning of the anniversary and honor those who lost their lives on 9/11. In Kinnelon, teachers will be discussing the event in classes at Kinnelon High School, Principal Dr. Wayne Merckling said. All students will be observing a moment of silence and the names of alumni who lost their lives will be read aloud. Three victims of the attacks were from Kinnelon. At the Walter T. Bergen School in Bloomingdale, Principal Frank Verducci said students will be participating in a special project in social studies classes.  "The fifth and sixth grade students will be writing letters, poems, songs and …

Kinnelon Mayor Honors Sept. 11 Volunteers

Three volunteers to be honored for helping with Hurricane Irene efforts at governor's luncheon.

While it was more than a month ago, Kinnelon Mayor Bob Collins is still very proud of the ceremony the borough held to commemorate 9/11 on Sept. 11. "Kinnelon really was pretty special that day," Collins said at the council's regular meeting Thursday before presenting several volunteers who assisted with certificates of gratitude. First, Collins thanked all the borough employees who prepared the green in front of the Kinnelon Municipal Building so that families could gather for the event. In particular, Collins thanked DPW Superintendent John Whitehead and Kinnelon Police Chief John Finkle. Collins then thanked Ernst Huber who built the 24 x 24 glass and wood display case that holds the 106-pound steel artifact the borough received in …

Hundreds Walk From Bloomingdale to Butler in Honor of 9/11 [VIDEO]

Local officials, residents gather at Butler Park for ceremony of song and prayer after Candlelight Walk.

The Boroughs of Butler and Bloomingdale came together for a ceremony to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to remind residents of how the community should stick together, not only in times of need but at all times, as Butler Mayor Robert Alviene said in his remarks, during the annual Candlelight Walk Sunday. Local officials, including the mayors and councilmembers of both Butler and Bloomingdale, police, fire and emergency responders, gathered at Bloomingdale Borough Hall on Hamburg Turnpike and walked, with glow sticks and American flags, nearly a mile down Butler Main Street to Butler Park Sunday night. After gathering around the war memorial in the center of the park, attendees participated in the ceremony by singing "Amazing …

VIDEO: Kinnelon Resident Escaped North Tower on 9/11

Frank Reinhardt shares his memories of the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Kinnelon resident Frank Reinhardt would have been on the 44th floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center when the first plane hit on 9/11, had he not gone downstairs for a danish. Reinhardt was in the building for a one-day seminar on petroleum engineering. After arriving a few minutes early, he realized refreshments were not being served and decided to take breakfast upon himself. Had he waited just a few minutes more to ride the elevator down to the lobby, Reinhardt could have lost his life. Moments after he exited, he turned around after feeling an "intensity" on his back, only to see a ball of flames bursting from the elevator he had just been inside. Reinhardt shared this, and other memories of 9/11, with Patch in the video …

This 9/11 Anniversary to be 'Most Significant' to Victim's Sister

Kinnelon High School graduate said anniversary symbolizes 10 years of mourning, but also the year she becomes as old as her brother was.

Matthew Yarnell was 26 years old when he was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11. The age Yarnell was at the time when he died remains one of the most symbolic aspects of this year's tenth anniversary to his sister, Lindsey Yarnell. "My brother was ten years older than me. So, while Matt was 26 when he died, I'll be turning 26 this September," said Lindsey, a 2004 Kinnelon High School graduate. "The ten-year mark is most significant to me as the year I become older than my older brother, rather than a decade of mourning or anything else." Yarnell, himself, graduated from Kinnelon High School in 1993. During his high school years, Yarnell was a National Merit Scholarship finalist, an active member of the Ski Club and was…

Butler to 'Stop and Remember' on Sept. 11

Borough agreed to participate in national moment of remembrance.

The Borough of Butler will stop and remember all the lives that were lost ten years ago on 9/11 at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All borough employees are being asked to cease activity for 60 seconds and, as sirens and bells ring out, honor the victims as part of the national Stop & Remember movement. Borough Clerk Mary O'Keefe asked the Butler Council if they would be interested in participating Tuesday. After the council unanimously agreed, the borough's name will now be added to the national list of participants.
